We are flying in from MSP so looking to drive to the southern end of the BWCA near Ely probably.

how soon are you going?
you may want to wait to make sure all the trouble is gone.
in the last few weeks there has ben multiple reports of a man assaulting robbing and even raping in BWCA
the suspect is very elusive and still at large
it has been reported that the man goes by the name "Samuel Whitcomb Hyde" but the middle name has not been official confirmed

here is the last known photograph of the man. he is armed and very dangerous. already responsible for multiple attacks

Former Charlie Guide (Ely & Atikokan here).

Get off Moose, Snowbank and Basswood as fast as you can. Suck it up and do portages, its' the only way to see cool stuff and not fight fucking motorboating Sconies for campsites.

Have your permits. I got "pulled over" by rangers four times last summer (they check everyone they see).

The Horse & Basswood Rivers get very crowded.

I'd say get up while it's still dark, hit the water by six, try to be in camp by one or two.

You can get to basswood in one day. But if starting from Mpls, a drive from Mpls will probably take around 4 hours to hit Ely, so that's a good portion of the day gone.

It's just if they have 3 days total then they have one day of rest which is no fun.

The times I've gone through basswood, it usually took from around 8am to 3pm to reach basswood and find a space to camp before heading deeper the next day. OP, I'd highly recommend staying longer than 2 nights since that will significantly restrict your relaxation time

Should clarify. Plan to drive up in the evening. Car camp (?). Then hit the lake mad early.

Since we're driving anyway, it doesn't matter to me where we put in or anything like that.

What would be the best strategy for getting away from motorboats and "sconies"??? Are sconies paranormal?

sconies are hicks from wisconsin. You can find an outfitter in most portage towns and should be able to book canoes ahead of time. And it will be busy there in June, which is why you need to go more than 3 days so you can get as deep as possible and not fight traffic.

Last time I was up there with friends we canoed a good 15 miles in the first day so we could spend as little time as possible near all the boy scout troops and other normies.

Keep in mind that it's a 40 minute drive from the outfitters in Ely to the Moose Lake public landing.

If you're short on time / a fag, you can pay for a motorboat to ferry you and your canoes to Prairie Portage (or the portages to Birch/Splash)
