Anyone into desert camping? Looking at planning a trip to New Mexico, possibly Arizona this summer, and could use some advice/inspiration.

I saw a really great documentary on it on netflix. It was much easier to watch on mute though, due to an all Dave Matthews Band soundtrack and shitacular narration.

did you do any hiking? ive car camped in redrock canyon as a kid and motorcycled around in mojave but the combo of routine 20mph winds and heat always had scared me off

is hiking at night viable in the desert?

do not try and hike at night and if you do, dont go far dude, i seriously was worried when i went and hiked at night with a large group of friends i just couldnt see my campsite because our friends let the fire go out luckily we saw my friend giving another a light show in their car from half a mile away

but yeah hiking during the day was great just wear sunsreen and general outdoor boots and bring chapstick and look for trails in your area and/or stuff like, streams or an oasis

Desert camping can be plenty of fun. Do it near a river or small lake. Bring or have shade. Pick a canyon where you're protected from the wind. If it's a clear night, wandering around at night isn't problematic, but I wouldn't try to do any serious hiking without light.

she didnt even realize it until she was shaking out the sleeping bag to ventilate it, suddenly very agitated sand viper comes flying out of the bag

Hey OP I dunno much about the proper desert, but the high desert is great. I spent two weeks backpacking in arches a few years ago and I frequently visit the forest north of Taos and the Valle Vidal.

Water is crucial, esp. in the dry season. Other than that, it's pretty much like normal camping. Some places make you pack out your poo and have fire bans.

Dunno if you're actually an indian but yeah that's what I've heard too. Once I was eating some peyote with a Pueblo chief's son. He told me that they're real as shit but you'll never see one unless you're really unlucky or go looking for one.
