Wild camping is strictly forbidden in areas marked as "Naturschutzgebiet" or "Landschaftsschutzgebiet". If you do it, you risk a fine between 50 to 5.000,- EUR. But even there it may be tolerated, if you stick to the golden rules of wild camping in Germany:
1. No waste
2. No noise
3. No fire
4. Be polite to hunters, rangers, farmers and generally all people you meet
In areas not flagged as "Naturschutzgebiet" wild camping is often frowned at, but not illegal in general.
Normally you would not get in any trouble while wild camping in Germany, if you know to behave and respect nature and the people.
I am German and doing wild camping here for over 20 years. Never had any trouble. But I have to admit, that I build my tent at 10 pm and leave before 7 am. I don´t leave any traces and don´t make any noise. So I am very hard to find, when I am doing wild camping.
And there are some areas where wild camping is officially allowed.
In Saxony there is a region called "Sächsische Schweiz" where a popular tradition of wild camping exists.
There are spaces called "Boofen" where wild camping is allowed.
