Hey you guys, I'm in the market for a new car only problem is I've got like 4000 to spend and I want something that can go /out/.

I heard jeeps are a meme but they seem to be the most /out/ car out there. What do you guys think?

What is your guys choice in /out/mobiles? What do you guys currently have?

If I had 4k I would buy a late 90's cherokee for cheap -they go for like $800-1200 in good condition- and upgrade the hell out of it. New tires, some bolt-on's in the engine, maybe a cam, open exhaust, and if for off roading, I would get fat diff's, like 4.56 gear ratio and a lift.

I just went on my local craiglist of a town with 30,000 in Alaska and found so many trucks under $4000 I stopped half way through the first page. So I would buy a truck for $2500 and spend the rest on new tires and a truck bed topper shell to camp in or haul stuff.

yeah trucks are pretty nice but they are get expensive even if you get one for 2500 bucks, the next time you need ball joints done, it would cost you about 1000 bucks to get them replaced, tires are usually 500-1000 on a truck, suspension or axles are not cheap, parts and labor in general are expensive for trucks unless you are an expert DIY junkyard rat

It’s pretty rusty, high mileage, electronics can be a bit wonky, tailgate’s busted, one taillight is duct taped back on and the clear coat is all scratched to hell.
So nothing major for an off-road truck.

I can’t drive it anymore and when I can I want a motorcycle to just quit my life for a while.

They're pretty forgotten but an International Scout is easy to work on and nearly unstoppable. An unrestored but running one can be had in your price range. Hard tops and rear seats are removable so you can have and SUV, wrangler, or pickup type vehicle all in one.

If you actually drive on the beach or do serious offroading all the time, then get a jeep or taco. If you're like 99.999% of people, and aren't going to go on anything more rugged than a maintained dirt road, get a prius. It has as much cubic storage as a small SUV or jeep, its comfy to sleep in and you can run the heat or AC all night off the battery, and if you drive long distances to get to your out location you save a fuck ton of money on gas.

Honest question, OP. Are you going to do legitimate off-roading or are you just going up some under-maintained forest roads?
I got my old Chevy sedan some ridiculous places just with FWD and decent ground clearance, even some mild off-roading.

Get a Suzuki Sidekick or Samurai, probably the most fuel efficient 4x4 out there and are usually pretty cheap especially if you get one rebadged as a Geo/Chevy Tracker. Just don't expect a smooth driving experience. They're bouncy little goats.
Or get an old Subaru GL, they've got a proper 4WD system but in all other aspects are just a 4cyl family car.

Coming from someone that owns a jeep and loves it, I really can't recommend them.
Wranglers are expensive as fuck, even old ones go for way more than they reasonably should. They have a lot of issues too, but they're pretty sturdy and don't break down much.

Honestly I have to agree with >>1200241 old cherokees are also great for /out/ stuff, but way cheaper.

Ford Ranger 4x4. Parts are dirt cheap, they're easy as fuck to work on, more cargo space than a Wrangler and you can camp in the back if you're a manlet.
Just make sure you get a 4cyl because the 6cyl gets the same MPG as a full sized truck.

Don't speed and don't corner aggressively or over-correct and you'll be fine.
The reason there was such a scare over SUVs tipping is because suburban botards started buying them as family wagons and thought they could drive them like a regular car even though they have a higher center of gravity.

Forgot to add, aftermarket parts for Jeeps will be cheaper than just about any other vehicle, which makes it even more worth it to get a Cherokee. I had two wranglers and I loved them and will get another one some day, but they are a lot more expensive from the beginning than Cherokees, unless you go pretty old or get a 4 cylinder/5 speed Wrangler.

If you have a magnum 5.2 or 5.9 you can just do intake, heads, and open exhaust for a 40-60 hp gain. Which is a solid 20-25% increase on the stock 225 hp.

Dude, who's been ripping you off? Here are a complete set of upper and lower control arms with the ball joints for a 2012 Nissan Frontier.

You might pay $300 labor, considering you are just jacking It up and pulling two bolts on either side and the stud the ball fits.

Anon, growing up, I did more "off road" and "/out/" type stuff in my old 1989 Toyota Camry than most Jeeps or trucks will ever see.

While I do have a truck these days, the only thing I've done with it that my Camry couldn't do is haul sheets of plywood home. And I probably could have nigger-rigged the Camry to do that as well.

Find a reliable vehicle you like and go with it...the best adventure vehicle is the one you have.

People really underestimate the off road potential of old beater cars. I've got a buddy that drove up a dried up creek bed in an old Buick Lesabre to find a campsite and he was passing 4x4 pickups and Jeeps that were stuck in the mud left and right.

The core idea of the Aztek was fine, they just over-designed it and gave it a silly name and an ugly face. The Element was a better execution of a similar idea.
Azteks are making a kitschy comeback though, because Elements are holding their value too well so you can't get a cheap one.

The other problem that the Aztek (and to a lesser extent the Element) had was that it was designed for and marketed towards young, active /out/doorsy types like rock climbers and skiers.

That was the Element's saving grace financially. It was marketed to ski bums, but it had practical features that made it attractive to other people. It also sold decently as a small business vehicle.
The Aztek flopped harder because young people couldn't afford it and old people didn't want it.
