Anyone here have a forestry degree? I'm curious about what the experience is like. What do you do now?

I'm thinking about hitting up the city college and working towards a certificate in Wildlife Science. If I like it, I can work towards an AS in the future. I'm currently working towards a degree in English, and my experience has been living in the library, poring over dead men's scratchings all day. I want to get out more and broaden my horizon.

I don't but I can tell you that forestry is a good path for a real /out/ job. A university near me is known for it's arborist program, but you better like climbing trees a lot to do that. At the same time English is a very versatile degree and can take you places, damn near anywhere. You can /out/ most of your free time if you own land thanks to your high paying job. Or even if you don't own land. Or don't have a high paying job. It is probably just some cabin fever hitting you because this cold winter. Can't quite go to the park and read your book comfortably when it's below freezing.

I'm romanticizing the idea of working as a park ranger (or any other related career) while writing a nature-inspired novel. Something about the soft isolation they have is attractive. I don't really see myself working a desk job, though I still want to write. And what I do write always tends to linger on the effects of natural surroundings towards characters, and also about what such nature looks like.

I grew up in Florida's swamps and moved to the Silicon Valley for university a few years ago. I'm like a fish out of water here. Maybe you're right too.

USNPS/USFS park ranger jobs are tough to get. Tons of competition, and if you're not a minority of some sort or a vet you'll be at the bottom of the list no matter what degree or qualifications you have.

I'm not at all worried about competition. Why does being a minority matter at all, though? Diversity hires?

I've been heavily considering the possibility of joining the USAF after my bachelor's to get some photojournalism experience (and pay for my PhD). Good to know that it'll help when I try to become a ranger. I'm a minority anyway, so there's that too.

There are tons of low skill seasonal outdoor jobs (americorps) but you wont get tons of isolation and you'll be busting your ass. But its fun

I met a guy who spent a winter in a forest service cabin with two other dudes and they just rode snowmobiles and checked on shit... I forgot qhat exactly. He wrote a song on guitar about how he was so happy when spring came after being stuck in the cabin all winter

I'm finishing muh Communications major at a state college. Got my fill of the city and what its life entails. I'm seriously considering a USFS/USFWS job when I get out. I only took a single class that could be related (Environmental Science), but I really have a desire to dive into a job that I can love and do my best at, and I definitely feel like something /out/ would be a fit for me.

I'm doing EMT/Search & Rescue training through a (expen$ive) private program this Summer to get a feel for it, but I might try applying for jobs come Fall.

Noted. I've also heard about Americorps from a friend who had a stint with them. I'll consider that too. Thanks for reminding me.

By isolation, I don't mean working in a tower or cabin completely alone for months at a time. What I really meant was to get away from the congestion of city life. I can work with people, no doubt, I'd actually love to.

I commute to Stanford from Cupertino. I goddamn hate the drivers here, the long commutes, the Silicon Valley drones, etc. Stanford's a good university, but it really isn't even worth it when my endgame isn't in academia.

Why do it through an expensive program? Many cheap ones out there, and the cert is worthless without experience anyway. Find a local volunteer rescue where you can start working as a responder immediately, and then they'll probably pay for you to go through a course.

Thanks for the advice fampai! I was already planning on a BLS, but I'll certainly tackle a ABEM, too.

I did some arborist work a while back and it was fairly interesting, it's very /out/ related and has similar skill sets to other areas of work you're looking for. It's not difficult to get into either, you can start doing some entry level couses that give a lot of practical experience and won't take long to finish either, that way if you realize it's not the kind of thing you're interested in you won't have wasted your time and can quickly move on to something else.
