I'm boutta be homeless by the end of the month, thinking of thru-hiking the AT while I'm still 19 with no responsibilities or ties to any one spot. How realistic would this be with no money, or should I sell some valuables I don't care about in the meantime? I already have all the stuff I'd need sans portable shelter. Pic unrelated, it was a castle in Germany and it was fun albeit cold as shit and hours of traffic jams there and back during the vacation

General rule of thumb is It costs about 1000 bucks every month on trail.

But you can probably do it cheaper if you're ok with a bit less fun in town.
Id say you could do the whole thing in a little over two months on the cheap.

I hiked the PCT with a buddy that I met on here. He actually funded his hike with food stamps, trail magic and sheer luck.

I'd say go for it. You'll meet incredible people, gain invaluable insight, and have a great time. Keep in mind that you'll have to face reality when you're off the trail though

Kinda in the same situation. I was gonna go do the AT. Petty much my plan was to go become the AT serial rapist/murderer, then go out in an awesome Rambo style finish when my body count stacks up enough and their rangers don't come back. But, alas, I decided to go do the Rockies instead.

Uh, no.

The gear required for a successful hike alone will cost you 1-2k. You can just toss a Coleman tent in your bookbag and start walking. Just because you don't go ultralite doesn't mean generic 'gear is going to cut it. You need a good backpack and sleep system at least.

You'll want a few grand for the actual journey too- hostels, resupply, gear replacements, etc. Hiker boxes do have some stuff in them, but not enough to actually live on. Plenty of other people rely heavily on them.

And if you're not actually trying to hike the thing, but just feel like being a larping faggot vagabond leech, then dont.

There's an unbelievable amount of those people on the trail. Literally homeless people who beg for supplies, steal gear and generally give actual hikers a bad name. Not only will I punch your limp-wristed lights out if I see your ads on the trail, but the homeless hikers are usually older, and have lots of experience swindling, begging, manipulating, etc. Basically what I'm saying is that's there's a lot of competition for people like that on the trail, and for a boy who's only seen 19 soy harvests, I can't recommend it.

Sell or pawn your DSLR or whatever valuables you have, pay another month's rent (or move back in with your parents for a couple months), get yourself a job at a gas station or some shitty place, and pull yourself up by your bootstraps until you're in a better position to finish college and get a real job.

Fucking Andrew Skurka did the AT in 3 months, and that was with 35+mile days and literally only 3 zero days. You need 5-6 months to do it unless you're some kind of purpose-built hiking machine.
