Spoons are 8/10 for most predator fish besides largemouth bass (except when shad die) .

Just went on a short vacation to Florida and I've seen so many 18-20" bass but I didn't bring anything to fish with.

I've spent way too many hours throwing a spoon with no results to agree. If I'm getting bites on a husky jerk I can usually get bites on a spoon also. But if I stop the husky jerk it suspends, the spoon drops like a brick and gets snagged 10x more often. I have better results with a lipless if I need to go deeper

Spoons definitely work for bass. It's really popular to vertical jig huge spoons for big bass. And normal spoons work good too, it's just not as popular.

Throwing 1/8oz spoons and catching ladyfish is stupid fun tho.

kastmasters are a staple but i need to buy more, along with epoxy jigs and bucktails
most of my fishing is breachways, jetties , and open beaches, but also in tidal rivers from shore

may get into kayak fishing this year, But with a 7/8 ounce epoxy jig i can almost outcast most people i fish along side so range isnt an issue for me

Savage Gear sand eels are pretty good, they're pretty heavy so you should be able to cast them for miles. Bomber badonk-a-donks have also worked well in the past.

Get a boat and fishfinder if you really want to hit some brackish water. Your best bet is real/live bait if it's murky water. My dad's froemd showed us his favorite spot when we went to visit Charleston SC, there was a sunken boat in a tiny little channel. We spent 30 minutes going there, without a stop, caught a half dozen fish in 20 minutes on some cutbait, and went home and ate them. Good time.

You want to size your hook to the fish to prevent deep hooking and for bigger fish you want them to be strong enough to not bend out. Also big hooks stick better.

Thickness is usually attributed to the weight of the float and require more shot below it to float it perpendicular. Lighter weight floats for shallow calm flowing water. panfish, yeah. Anything else will require anywhere from a little to a lot of knowledge just to be able to catch one. Tell a bass fisherman to go catch a salmon, a trout (non stocked), a walleye, sturgeon, even a damn carp and they wouldn't have a clue.

For rods you will want one rated as a medium or lighter. If you want specific recommendations we can give you some. For the reel you’ll ideally want a 2500 size reel. Buy a spool of 6-8lb monofilament line, usually cheap so try and get a 300yd spool Incase you fuck up and need to respool. All you will need after that is to tie on a size 6 or 8 Aberdeen hook, followed by pinching your split shot on the line about a foot above the hook. If you were going to use a bobber you want to clip it to the line far enough up away from the hook so that your bait will suspend in the water near the bottom. For bait I’d just go with nightcralwer to start. Either break a whole one in half or in quarters if their big and pierce it on your hook a few times so a fish can’t yoink it off your hook instantly. The rivers are all washed out from all the rain we've been getting over the past few days.
On top of that, the lake it half frozen over still. Which puts a damper on fishing.

good on you anon. just going off my instincts i know i probably don't need a delicate presentation, i'll probably be stripping hand over hand so my heavy sinking line should be fine, they fight hard and heavier fly rods cast through wind better, and that clouser minnows catch everything, so i think my big striper combo will be just fine for albies. probably a #25 2 piece leader ~ 4 feet long, and then i have probably around 350 yards of line on my reel if you count backing, running line, and shooting head, so i should be unspoolable

Well any esox are known to be even more aggressive than bass.
Wild trout are caught on plenty of lures around here, such as plugs and jigs. Spinners and spoons are well known for trout too.
Walleye i dont have experience with but a friend of mine uses just swimbaits on jigs.
Smallies as aggressive as largemouth.
Not sure what other species are there to consider as "harder to get to bite"
Usually its the conditions that matter, not lure choice.
Obviously there's some bass lures out there (crazy ones like a fucking bat lure) that are just stupid to use in general.

you can buy blades for like in-line spinners for mad-cheap, like 25 for a $1.

My idea is that you just tie a hook, but before tying it, put a blade on a clevis (also cheap) and secure it on the line with two small split shots. Then tie the hook.

Another idea is to just buy some of those blades, split rings, and punch a hole with a nail and hammer to make a 2nd hole for the hook to make a spoon?

A family member has recently offered to have me come down and use their beach house in Hilton Head island. It was all provided when I took the class. The turnkey kits look pretty good to me, but don't know if they're actually any cheaper/more expensive than if you buy everything separate. Its a hassle free way to get into it though.

And I would definitely suggest getting an actual rod wrapper, if for nothing else than to keep proper tension on your wraps.

If you do decide to buy everything deprecate you can always call wherever you're ordering from and they can point you the right direction as far as which guides to get and sizing when ordering grips and whatnot.

A four stroke of the same size weighs roughly as much as three full grown blue whales and probably requires a tractor to put on a boat. This deck is about 14' up at dead low tide. I've lifted 25-30+" blues over it and lost them as well trying to lift them. If my wife is there I tend to stay on the deck only because she's had a bunch of back surgeries. If I have a striper on I'll jump the side and pull it in from shore.

How do I get this stupid wind knot out? I tried rubbing it in chapstick and pulling it through, but I think I just made it worse.

It’s too deep on my spool to cut, but not deep enough for it to not effect casting.

Should I worry at all about getting strong high-quality snaps?

I'm just going to use them for swapping out cranks and jerkbaits without having to lose line everytime I cut and retie. Biggest fish I'd ever imagine catching would be an accidental 10-20lb catfish.

I typically cast with just my wrist and arm and if I fish too much my wrist suffers. Thats when I switch to a double-armed cast where I use my left arm to actually carry the motion out. Wish I built that habit more

Nope. Since I started using baitcasters rarely will I pick up my spinning rod. I simply don’t like the feeling of braid almost gashing into my finger every time I cast with spinning gear. Like the other guy said, better casting distance, accuacy, ability to throw heavier presentations more effectively, heavier line, more comfort, etc.

I love my baitcasters and won’t buy another spinning rod for bass fishing again. That being said, I still need my spinning rods for trout and panfish

Yea I do too but spinning reel doesn’t have the complexity and tight tolerance of a baitcaster. I would never bring my baitcaster for surf fishing. I would use it for jetty and dock though.

Yeah fish can handle a lot but belly up usually means their a goner. The swim bladder is one of the more delicate organs and easily damaged when a fish is out of water and suffers a fall onto hard ground. Or in this cased gets knocked out by a redneck.

Appearently Gander Outdoors near me will be opening before the end of this month. I’ve seen the parking lot pretty full with work trucks for about a month so hopefully they have a good fishing section. Everything I’ve read leads me to believe it will.

From a bit of researching, I’ve seen shimano curado 70, shimano aldebaran, and daiwa sv series that get marketed for throwing light lures. There are probably more too

I’ve been wanting to get into wet wading in the upcoming summer months. Does anyone know of any inexpensive waterproof hip packs? Or should I nut up and buy a patagucci or simms model?

How I wet wade: wear a vest, like what those fly anglers use. It's enough space for me and has tools like clippers and my net hanging off of it.

Since I'm wet wading, it's probably a hot summer day. Il wear a long sleeve shirt, long pants, long socks, and open sandals. The more open they are the better. Like get a pair that strap into ur feet.

You realize that no matter what you wear, rocks will get under your foot + foot wear, so you need to wear something that allows you to shake em out easily.

I tuck everything in so I'm not worrying about ticks or sunburn too (along with a boonie hat). A good idea to keep a towel and dry footwear in the car.

A pack for carrying tackle might work for you, but I prefer just a vest + carrying light.

Honestly it’s less in the reel and more in the rod/line. I’m sure if I spooled my Orra with 6 or 8 pound test (on top of backing of course) and put it on a rod rated for 1/8 to 5/8 oz lures I could throw drop shots and shakey heads perfectly

They can. I have a Curado and four Diawa Tatulas. They'll easily let you throw a small 1/4 lure or a weightless senko 40 yards.

I started out wet wading with a traditional fabric trout fishing vest but I bought a cheap one and the pockets got ripped by branches and shit it would get snagged on so I decided to just buy pic related. Ive used it for all of my wet wadding fishing. The outside layer itself is not waterproof, but there is a sewn in waterproof pocket that you can seal your phone and keys into.
