If the Northeast /out/ists are wanting to have a meetup, why not those in the eastern side of Dixie?

There are plenty of places to go, Cherokee is nice in the summer, plus there are no requirements other than camping away from streams, unlike the smokies where you have to have permits and stay in predetermined cabins.
