How many miles do you guys travel to go /out/ for a day hike and some /out/ cooking? My go to place is 50km each way and it fucking sucks. My other options are a 5k footer 30km each way or the ocean 25km each way.

But so far the recommendations are national forests and other people's property. Anywhere else? Is it legal in the US for me to just pitch a tent on public property if I found a patch of forestry? Would I look like a complete retard if I pitched a tent on a 2 mile hiking trail that clearly isn't meant for overnight hikes? Is that even legal?

Look up your state's public lands. There's no need to deal with the stress and trouble of tresspassing/ wandering around. Find the nearest public land, usually a state park, that allows primitive camping. There might be a small usage fee but then you can park safely and get /out/

I've only used it once.
