Hey /out/ I have need to make a decision for my spring break (1st week of March)
Should i hike Mt Lafayette/Washington NH, or save up for camping equipment?

If I go up to NH, it's going to run me about 500$ (gas, hostel, crampons, ice axe, some other winter equipment). Or should I save this money for a regular tent/sleeping bag (which I don't have yet) and go warm-weather camping in my neck of the woods (south east PA)

Acutely, I want to go climb mt lafayette. Except it means I'll be stashing this specific equipment away until next winter (since all the snow has melted in PA, and I don't foresee doing a trip out the new england after spring break)

Long term though, I want to get into normal camping around PA.

So far, micro-spikes and trekking poles have worked for winter hiking where I'm at, it's just I can't decide the upfront costs for climbing a real mountain vs buying regular camping gear (for the rest of April - October)

Going /out/ should always be your main priority, buying gear is nice but pretty meaningless.

Do you have experience winter hiking in extreme conditions?

The Mt Washington hike isn't bad, but the weather is some of the worse on the planet.

Winds in the summit are hurricane force most days. Wind chill can be -50 below zero. Sometimes -80 below zero. Highest wind speed ever recorded by a human, 231 mph after which their anemometer was destroyed, it was gusting even faster than 231, they just couldn't record it. The wind chill is typically lower than My Everest. At times it's the single. coldest place on the planet.

Like I said, the hike isn't bad. The conditions are extreme in winter. People die there every year. If you're not used to that kind of stuff, wait till summer to hike it.

That's why im thinking of lafayette as the "realistic" option (winds are much less intense), but do washington if the conditions luck out (sunny, low wind)

Yeah man, I’m in NH, not super close to mountains but right on the way. I’d definitely go with you to Lafayette or another one, but Mt. Washington is a dubious prospect in winter and it scares me tbqh.

Yeah Lafayette is the realistic, for sure hike.
But i'm also thinking of trying Mt Washington if the weather is good. At least going up the ammonoosuc trail to the lake of clouds hut, then trying the summit if it's good, otherwise bagging Monroe nearby and calling it a day

Both are great but watch the weather until then. It's not a joke on either of those peaks.
