Not sure where else I'd ask this. Anyone /out/ here use a chainsaw regularly?

I've worked weekends on a crew for five summers, and have experience with some brands, but I'm looking to become haz-saw and I'm not sure what else is out there

You need to have experiemce with both stihl and huskies to really know which brand you prefer. Don't rely on what people just tell you. I myself prefer stihl, I wouldn't buy anything but their pro saws personally.

Don't discount echo either, I have a couple I keep as loaner saws and they are an unstoppable no matter how much you neglect their maintenance or how you run them. I'm impressed anyway.

Don't waste money on remington, poulan or any other store saw. Avoid any homeowner level saw and invest in a pro saw if you can.

I would also like to add it's smart to buy whatever you closest dealer sells and services. That way you are never waiting on parts or have to travel for a fix if you can't fix it yourself.

Husq user here. I from my experience Husqvarna is better. But i mostly use it in Finnish winter so for summer you get the one you feel is better. Also i fond husq erconomics better for me.

Now that I think about it, I never seen anyone use anything else either, in the woods at least.

Sthil is my all time top choice. Most reliable, smooth running, easy to maintain, just plain dependable. I don't own a saw right now myself. But is I was to by one, I would only ever buy a Sthil.

I burned up a Remington fresh out of the box. My stihls on the other hand are workhorses that have paid for them selves several times over. My dad owned poulan for about a year, worthless junk would be an understatement, broke more than it ran.

That's an advanced case, but its from long term exposure to vibrations.
So basically if you run a chainsaw on a logging crew 5 days a week for 20 years the nerve endings in your fingers and hands are destroyed slowly over time until you can no longer feel anything.

I'm a foreman with a tree service and have been butchering trees for the power company for about four years now. Anecdotally, most men I've worked with prefer Stihls, as do I. They tend to fire up easier, break less often, and generally seem to have more "balls" than the comparable sized Husqvarna.

That said, I personally own a Husky 540 XP to climb with on private jobs because the price was right and it's treated me well so far. Found it on eBay, tagged as "doesn't run". Cleaned out the carb and muffler, changed the burnt out spark plug, ran a bit of seafoam through it(pretty sure dude used motor oil as premix), and it runs great.

Personally i like both Stihl and Husqvarna. Stihl's do tend to have a better engine they last longer (for professional use a saw will last ~4 years anyway) but Husqvarna to me feel and handle better. You really can't go wrong with either.

Not necessarily, wearing gloves, using heated handles when it's cold out or your gloves are wet, using modern saws (bigger saw=more vibration).
One problem often seemingly ignored in North America is bar size, the longer the bar the more vibrations it causes, the reason it's a problem there is everyone seems to think they need a 90cc saw with a 32-36" bar where really you would do just fine with a 70cc and 24" bar, even the 24" being excessive most of the time.

Stihl is made in China/Brazil. My autismo uncle swears by Husqvarna, but I just use Stihls from the 70's and 80's. Parts are still available and you can do most of the maintenance yourself.

No, but honestly, they're nice, but even more expensive than Stihl, I think.

Some brands have some semi-pro lines, which also ought to be good enough if you don't use them daily.

Personally, I have good experiences with the SOLO SP lines. It's another german brand, but I'm not sure about their availability. Also, seems like they are now AL-KO and have changed their naming.

Oh, and you can improve your work quite a bit, if you get some good chains. The OEM ones might not necessarily be the best ones. Had to work killing various shrubbery for a while, which meant cutting around in dirt and rocks, and some special chain for that purpose made life so much easier.

For general felling i use a Husqy 359 with a stihl full chisel chain on a narrow kerf 15" bar and it's godly, for stuff where there's smaller trees or dirt and rocks are present everywhere i use a 550 with the x-cut semi chisel because the semi chisel chain is more resistant to damage. In my experience the best general chain is the Stihl Oilomatic full chisel, it is a bit aggressive though, but for trees that have dirty bark etc. a semi chisel chain is better, i like the Husqy X-Cut chains. There are specialty ones like carbide or Vidia tipped that are basically resistant to damage from rocks or dirt but you can't sharpen them with a file, you need a special grinder plus you can't get them super sharp like a chisel or semi chisel sharpened with a round file.

That's the problem, "most" logging crews out west that do manual felling probably aren't worried about it and that's where things go bad.

As far as I know most professional crews have mandatory cool down times for their fellers now. So like you cut for an hour and rest for 15 min. But based on how that tends to slow down production idk how much that rule of thumb is actually followed.

Hopefully with the new tech we won't be seeing as much, but it'll be a couple decades before we know. Just look at life long loggers from back in the 70s and 80s, you can find some pretty bad cases from those guys.

I don't know any studies or something, only hearsay. But new (less than 20yo) saws have quite good vibration dampening, and it seems that white fingers are less common. Still, after a full day in the forrest, my fingers feel like shit and I can't really do anything fine with them for a while, so it's definitely still doing something to you. But so does hammering away with an axe.

It does majorly come down to the user nowadays, some rules to follow is if your hands are cold use heated handles,they're worth the extra ~60€ in price they add to a saw, while they might not get regular use, they are a godsend when you need them, use an axe with a thin handle and don't go beating wedges like a neanderthal as some people do, take a break every once in a while, i tend to take a 5 minute break every refuel or so, don't use those thin gardening gloves your mom wears to pull carrots unless you're an arborist and need the dexterity, get a pair of decent leather gloves or even anti-vibration gloves.
Safety should be every workers priority, there are guys that think they don't need PPE or they don't wear it because it's uncomfortable, tough fucking shit Bubba, put your fucking earmuffs down on your ears, lower your visor and wear your protective pants, don't have your visor up and your muffs either broken off like some morons or snapped on the top of your helmet so they don't move around. You're old enough to care for yourself and noone else will come and pamper you, it's worth being a bit uncomfortable if it saves your leg, hearing, vision or life. Don't be a moron, wear your protective gear.

I work for a sawmill and go to the logwoods in the weekend.
Stihl mights as well be a toy, its weak and dosent have enough power. Stihls do have good "gas milege" ha. Huskys are damn good, can be a bitch to start in the cold but have allot of power especially when you get those dogs filed down.

Both Stihl and Husqy saws eventually die when used regularly for professional felling. The only saws i know of that don't die are the old Tomos-Yugo made Husqies and the old Stihls like the Contra.

I've used Stihl and own 2 Echos.
Personally, I feel both perform the same.
I've always been under the impresson of stick with a name brand and buy whichever of those brands has the most readily available parts closest to where you live.
I have equal access to both and picked Echo because of the 5yr warranty.
Decide what all you plan to cut and buy based on size.
Also, invest in a chain sharpener. Either the electric grinder wheel kit or hand files. Your saw is only as good as the blade is sharp.

I remember working with a Makita and at times after releasing the gas the saw would continue to go at full revs without me holding down the trigger at all, it also seemed to just not start, almost like it was flooded. Does seem possible since i remember when i cleaned it a few days later when it laid on it's side gas came out of the carb where the air filter goes on.
