Anyone here do some wildland firefighting?

I'm looking at some places right now up in region 6 with the forest service and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on best ways to finagle a job.

GS-03 positions for that region are going out tomorrow and I'm trying to decide to take this biological sciences GS-04 tech position in the same region or not.

Anyone know how likely you are to get an offer if they have been calling you pretty regularly to see if you're still interested?
I've been in contact with the hiring official but have to decide tomorrow whether to take the tech position or wait and try to get a wildland fire one.

>Tech position is in Tonasket, WA and may have the opportunity for "some" fire there as well.

You can take the tech position and ask to be red-carded. That way you can hop on with the fire crew if your department is willing to let you go. Sometimes this happens if your workload is low or sometimes the USFS declares a high fire severity and requests that anyone certified to fight should fight.

Yeah, I went ahead and took it after the fire guy got back to me and said I wasn't selected for any GS-03 positions. Hiring official for that national forest said they would do exactly what you're talking about and its in the dry side of Washington so I should get at least SOME fireline time.

Hopefully I'll either hear something back from some of the private guys or from some of the other regions I applied to.

Anybody in here know what the fire probability for eastern WA? Like how often guys on the call list get called out for that or for some of the bigger fires?

You'll probably end up in another state. Fire crews float around to hit up states that get slammed. Considering how bad California was, you'll probably see yourself in California for a couple fires. As for local fires, that'll depend on how friendly you are. If the fire guys like you, they'll grab you for spots or modules.

I've been a Hotshot. It was easier than, say, roofing. It was WAY easier than clearing wilderness trails.
