Hey idiots, my family thinks my idea has no merit and I'm too poor for real market research, so I'm coming here for feedback. It's a transparent heat shrink tube with art printed on it for decorating your water bottle. Do you think it could sell?

Set up a square space website and advertise on Google AdWords. When a buyer clicks on “buy”, redirect them to a page that says you’re currently waiting for supply, enter your email address and we will let you know when they’re back in stock.

Let it run for 1 month. If you get enough sales to cover costs, then go ahead with your idea.

This is assuming you have contacted a wholesaler or manufacturer and know the unit cost already. Protip: you can get free trials with google and square space, so all you have to pay for is the URL.

This has saved me from starting unprofitable businesses on two occasions. This way I only lost the hosting cost, which was negligible.

Read “the 4 hour workweek” by Tim Ferris if you want to do this for real.

1. It’s almost certain that if you have a good idea, it will get stolen and done for cheaper in China. That doesn’t mean you can’t do it, or won’t make money. It’s not like there can be only one company that produces any given product.

2. If it’s patentable, which I doubt this is, they cost tens of thousands to buy, on top of the legal costs of prosecuting people who violate it. As long as you’re not exactly copying other people’s designs, you won’t have a problem.

You’re both watching too much Shark Tank. That show looks to turn businesses into big time multi million dollar operations, whereas this is just a side gig. If those were real concerns, nobody would ever be able to open a small business out of fear.

On the idea itself, would heat treatment effect the integrity of the bottle?
I know little about polymer plastic, but I wonder if it could change the shock resistance.

Course it could sell. I know a guy who made cat litter boxes that look like stereo cabinets and he made enough to buy his house and then some. Shit did dry up and fingerhut stopped selling it.
