Even if you are reenacting, the pipe hawk is a weapon and status symbol before anything else, and it would still behoove you to have a decent poll headed hatchet with you.
As for getting cold steel, while 99% of their stuff is crap, they actually make a decent hawk. Good steel, and being an axe, balance isn't there to be fucked up like their swords. Pic is actually a Cold Steel hawk, that another anon (can't remember is if it was /k/ or here) stripped the paint off of, did some file work, and then coated with boiled linseed. Worlds of difference, eh?
