Why is mountaineering so expensive, /out/? I just want to climb mountains without having to work three plus years at some shit job just to pay for one expedition.

To climb mountain next to me, Mt Hood, all thats required is some good boots, an ice axe and a good jacket in addition to your normal mountain hiking stuff.

Other mountains like the Sisters or some in the Tetons are the same.

But if you want to fly across the world and follow a sherpa up Kilimanjaro then yes, itll be very expensive.

You are picking the wrong mountains. As the other two said there is a lot of climbing all over the place that is practically free. In fact while you are gaining experience you don't want to go up the complicated shit that costs a lot of money, logistics and gear so it's a moot point anyway.

That's not just mountaineering, that's expedition mountaineering/high altidude climbing/whatever the correct term.

OP, what are you doing right now?

Are you just a non-english speaker that fucked up the terms and has done everything there is to do in his home range, or are you just some basement dweller that dreams of stuff he never can do anyways, but seeks for excuses?

The mountain I live on goes up to around 6800 ft. I want to peak Rainier but I need a vehicle so I can get there and that shit is expensive for me.

Generally anytime your going up with a guide its going to be expensive. This is because its a huge operation and people are hauling up all your stuff. (House rules) as it supports locals. Aside from this...unless you are a pro climber I would suggest you go up with a party and a guide. Friendly reminder that these people basically live there and know the mountain and where it would be safe to cross (generally). climbing is expensive as fuck when you start looking at technical climbs

Dunno where you're "climbing" at, but I still need an axe and crampons in the summer. Winter actually you usually ditch them in place of snow shoes and ski poles/whippets.

Gaiters are a waste of weight and space for the most part. Gumbywear.

Snowpants like what we wore skiing back in the 90s?

I've got a face mask I've never needed to use, thus it never gets brought with.

Not him but gaiters are priceless when breaking trail, crampons are mandatory for high angle rock and ice, ice axes are good for high angle snow and ice, snowpants are stupid (you're right) but hardshell pants are not, and facemasks plus ski goggles are must haves above treeline.

I know what crampons and ice axes are used for, I think you're misunderstanding what I wrote.

I know facemasks have their uses skiing, but we're talking about climbing here and they are not must haves "above the treeline." I've been in very high wind situations where a mask would have been nice, but not really a necessity.
