>>1214055Well, the sides button up if you need to make the hat more aerodynamic in wind, of if you're walking through thick bush, or if it's in the way of work you're doing (carrying/shouldering things, getting into tight spaces, mechanic work, etc). Australian soldiers wear a more fancy version called the Slouch Hat, which only has one side buttoned up so its not in the way of their rifle. If you see Gurkhas in uniform they have brimmed hats that are tipped far to one side to keep it out of the way when they shoulder their rifles... which is /fa/ but impractical.
But anyway, having a wide brim gets in the way a lot so it's noice to have the option.
