Any saltwater guys up? I’m headed down to the southern Keys in mid April and I’m hoping to get out on the big water for pelagics and some tuna at the humps.

Anyone have any experience trolling LED squids at dusk/dawn/dark? I saw some and they look intriguing and the blue mimics the normal bioluminescence found out there.

I have great success already with just basic squids and other birds but I’m always looking for something new to try. Glad I did with the flutter jigs, so much easier than classic jigging and I caught the largest amber I’ve ever hooked off a flutter.

question, what kind of rig would i need for my truck in order to get a kayak? i have a 5 1/2 ft bed (i know) and was just thinking of tossing the thing in there and ratchet strapping the bitch down buuut i don't know if that'd be good for the yak.

This is how I do mine, except I have a 12 ft kayak and an 8 ft bed on my truck. I have a chain that's wrapped around my truck's frame and comes up through the bed, then and I attach the chain to the kayak with a carabiner. Then I tie a little piece of rope to the hole near the end of the bed and to the kayak handle so it doesn't bang around while im driving. Ratchets are overkill and you can easily warp your yak by ratcheting too hard. I just use the straps with clips and knots.

Honestly couldn’t tell you. They all seem exactly the same to me so I stopped buying even the mid priced mono and only buy the cheapest I can find. Always seems to work just fine.

each individual half-cape has at least 200 feathers, and if you're tying dry flies, each feather makes 2-5 flies depending, so if we just assume 200 usable feathers, each one producing 3 flies, that is enough to make 2,400 flies. i think $62 isn'd bad for 2,400 flies worth of material, don't you? i mean we're talking about 7.75 cents per feather at the absolute most, and probably more like 5 cents in actuality, so . . .

You have any experience targeting suckers? there is a creek a few hundred feet from my house that I know has suckers for sure in it and I figure it will be a good way to break that rod in when I get it. I'm thinking just a regular dry dropper rig and try and match my bottom fly to any bugs I see in the water. When we were little kids my neighbor and I would find the smallest Aberdeen hooks we had and put a piece of pine cone on there and as soon as it would hit the water they would smack it so i'm hoping it will be just as easy. That was probably 10 years ago and a different time of the year but I at least am confident they are still in there. If you have any fly recommendations let me know

I have to disagree. It's definitely a darker meat fish but still really good, lots of flavor. But then again, i love blue fish if prepared properly, so if you're a white fish only kinda guy, you may not like it. When in doubt soak in milk for a while.

i've not got a ton of experience with suckers, but if you have creek chubs they love pheasant tails and hares ear nymphs. and if they are like creek chubs, anything orange pisses them off and they try to destroy it. no bullshit my favorite fly for creek chub is an orange pinch on strike indicator (the ones that are like foam stickers) pinched on to a size 10 or 12 hook

Dude there are so many GREAT saltwater fish why even bother killing a crevalle? I can catch a mess of yellowtail easily and they’re a top5 worldwide eating fish. Same with Mahi. I like tuna plenty and catch blackfin on the humps.

Some jacks are great eating. Crevalle, though? Even sharks don’t like eating crevalle. Dice some up as cutbait next time. It’s not very popular.

I let them go unless they’re fucking up my lines too often and then they get the gill filet knife.

Suckers however are weird. I caught one on a 1/80th oz jis with some feathers on it.

I believe they'd like a piece of corn on a hook, or a nightcrawler, etc. Main thing is to keep it still because they are bottom feeders.

Why do people recommend a Texas Rig to be thrown on a MH rod? When I’m using standard 2/0 and 3/0 worm hooks with a 3/16 oz weight it doesn’t seem to make sense to throw it on that stout of a rod with braid. If I were using 4/0 or 5/0 superline hooks, I could see it. But standard 2/0 or 3/0 hooks? No way. I’m afraid of bending them out.

If I’m on the boat? I bring everything. My big tackle bag with all of my hardbaits. My box with all of my terminal tackle. And my big bin with all of my plastics in it. I put everything in the storage compartments and decide what I want to use once I’m on the water.

If I’m shore fishing I have a pond box I always keep in a normal underarmour backpack as well as a smaller box that I will fill with specific baits that I think will be good for the spot I plan on fishing for the day.

Fly fishing I’ve got all of my stuff in the same bag regardless of what I’m fishing for so I don’t need to think about anything other than what rod and reel to bring

If I ever do cook gills whole which is once in a while I keep it simple. If you’ve got them gutted and head gone you’re basically halfway done. I scale them them completely then score them from top to bottom. I usually space out 3-4 scores per side depending on the size. Then I just mix some cornmeal with pepper, salt, and a little bit of old bay and toss the fish in that mix until it’s got and even coating. Heat up some oil and fry them on each side until they’re nice and golden and crispy

If you don’t like that you can make them like a normal breaded fillet with milk or egg and flour. I haven’t tried them like that I’m pretty sure they come out fine

i decided to try some royal wulff flies but with wholely the wrong supplies. the only thing i had that was the right material was the hook and thred. the top one is a #10, with pheasant tail for the tail, rabbit's foot wings, and grizzly hackle that i coloured with a sharpie. the band is 140 denere danvilles flat waxed in fire orange.
the small one is a #20 and the only thing different is i used a thinner black thread, grizzly for the tail, and didn't colour the hackle

If the rain was cold they would go deep to stay in warmer waters early on, but small ponds change temp rapidly so it you arent early the water would probably cooled down enough to turn them off of most bites that arent dangling in front of their noses for an effortless meal.
tiny dropshot perhaps.

Also they may come to the topwater bite to get food that could fall from trees and get some warmth if any sun comes out, make lots of cast near cover and under the trees because chances are they cant find or see the lure easily.

They may also stay as deep as possible to stay away from predators since they cant see them easily, needs experimenting for an hour or so.

Most good brand name lures won’t be corroded from salts. Your hooks and split rings might get messed up, but that’s an easy replacement. Bluefish is the only thing that might fucked you up. Otherwise, it’s very unlikely to lose lures on the surf if blue fish aren’t around and your line/knots are solid

budget and intended species you plan on targeting is all you really need to decide what rod. if you want to camp with it you will want a 3-4 piece "travel" rod. if you're fishing small streams, ponds for sunfish or small trout id go with a ultralight up to a light. if you plan on trying to catch some bass or smaller catfish go with a medium or a medium light.

Here’s the deal with california trout fish stocking
If it’s those tiny public city park ponds. Literally 95% of the fish will get wiped out by fisherman and pelicans in less than a week because they will both flock those ponds and pluck them out as soon as the fishes are planted. Fishes in big pay for entry lakes will last longer because stocking happens more often and fishes have more places to hide on big lake and fishing pressure isn’t as crazy because of the fee. However, you need to know where to fish on those giant lakes. It can be difficult without boats on those lakes as well

look on the dfw website and theyll have the stocking programs for the lakes around you.
look at the dates and upcoming dates and plan your trout fishing around those times. look at where they are physically stocking them (boat ramp, dock area, particular shoreline) and fish around those areas towards the beginning of the stocking, trout tend to hang out near where they get put in for a few days for up to a week or so before they disburse into the main parts of the lake. we been killin' em bruh on powerbait and nightcrawler combo, hit it before the storm comes.

Here's something interesting, every brand of lipless crankbait I own is heavier than its advertised weight.

Half-ounce Red Eye Shads are .6 ounces, half-ounce Berkleys are .75, Ratt-l-traps without their hooks are .56, Yo-Zuris were the closest to their weight at .53.

All my jerkbaits were dead-on though.

New tie here. Improved my old crayfish with more weight - now I can drop it 4 inches and it will orient properly. UV epoxy is incredible - I'll prob try for some hyper realistic ghost shrimp next. I might try 'beefing' up this crayfish pattern but idk I feel like bass will hit the smaller ones more (theory being that bass are less afraid of smaller claws)

this part is hard to see but then i split the thread and put just a little red ice dub in there with a split thread technique to kinda look like gills but that part is entirely opional
>reverse tie in one more time
>build up a head and finish the fly
>glue on eyes
>cast it at a big fish
you can use any colours you want

Where are you seeing them for $200? Everywhere I've found them has been $300. Either way I've spent that much on a reel before lmao.

The only thing that would keep me from getting one is it looks like the smallest size they make is 5500 (I mean yeah it's a surf reel so not a surprise) and I don't know if that's too big for the rod I'd want to put it on.

Maybe you should stop catching dinky ones? Small Mouth are top tier game fish esp on a fly rod. LMB are fun if they're big. I mean this is mostly a US based board.....the largest predatory freshwater fish (and most common) are LMB/smallmouth/spotted bass

I work them according to color. Tho my buggers also have a ton of flash/wire/action to them. With olive I work it like a small sunfish or if on bottom like a sculpin. With brown/red buggers more like a crayfish hop. With black like a worm. Idk, it helps to have really gaudy buggers

Fishing to eat is different than fishing to fish depending on where you're at. If you're targeting catfish then worms+garlic butter/garlic butter spray work well. Live shad are also good as all around bait. Catfish are good eating, so are Yellow Perch/Crappie/Walleye/Bluegill. For Perch/Crappie/Walleye/Bluegill anything resembling little minnows/grubs/bugs work well.

For just a kickass time fishing....this is my go-to lure. Reel in at decent speed/jerk it once or twice then stop. It'll catch big crappie/bluegill/bass etc.

25 cents is damn good deal for 10 jigheads. Normally i buy them at 3.25 for 25 of them.

Those are jig heads meant for tubes, lil soft plastic lures that go over the lead weight like a dress on a nice lady.

However, you can still hook anything you want on there, like a worm or a piece of corn or whatever and it'll do you good too. Even other lures if they fit nicely.

Try them with a bobber/float.

I'm in East Victoria Australia which is literally shit for catching fun fish unless you have a big boat, I'd kill to be able to go fish at ponds for 3-8lb bass. It's responsible for getting so many people in murica into fishing. Plus the more that people that do it the more money that goes into conservation programs for loads of animals.

First of all, where specifically are you fishing? Any reel will do if you're a beginner. Get a spinning reel. Something like a 2500 series.

1/16th oz lures are easy to cast with 4lb test. 6 lb test is ok. I wouldnt go higher than that. However with a bobber it will be fine.

Every beginner seems to not understand how drag works on a reel; basically at a certain weight of pull on the line, the spool will let out line. So if you have 2lb line, you set the drag so it's less than 2 lbs (like 1 lb) so that if any fish ever pulls harder than that, it'll just unspool line rather than break it.

For a spinning rod you'd want a spinning real. Shimano makes good shit. Watch some videos of casting with it - can get kinda tangled if you're not careful. For a first time spinner rod I wouldn't spend over 100 on a reel. Even around 50 should get you something decent.

Some people think small wild trout are fun even tho there's "bigger" fish around in bigger rivers.
Some people just want to a lot of action fishing out panfish rather than target some of the big bass in the pond.

their custom tool was like a plier and it wasn't a thin tubular o-ring. it was more like a plastic wrap. so you could pierce through it and the worm for added reinforcement

Fish aren't just in every part of a river. They prefer the deeper and slow moving spots to sit in. It doesn't mean you won't find them feeding smaller areas tho.

If you find a spot that's flowing fast but just at the end if the flow, or normally to the side, is a slow spot, fish are in that slow spot watching potential food come down ready to grab like a conveyor belt.

Anywhere fish can't swim further,like a dam, is also a hot spot, but try and combine the last two principles.

Some fish just take up any part of the river they can find, like sunnies in my area

Not even fishing, I haven't even been yet, I'm just eyeing up new things to try and for fishing I need to buy a license, but you need to know what, when and where you're fishing before you go out.

Some of the licenses only apply to coarse fish (whatever that is), some only to salmon or trout, I googled my local river to see what license I would need and apparently there's fish from both categories in it so I don't know what the fuck to do. I don't even plan in keeping or eating them (if I did catch anything), I just want to spend a day or two out there getting the feel for it, I don't know what any of the fish look like so wouldn't know what I was legally allowed to keep anyway.

The whole thing seems like a piss take.

I might be wrong, but I think licenses for specific kinds of fish are only needed if you are going to keep the fish.

Think of it as a weedless whopper plopper, they make much more noise on the surface than a regular frog. These work great when the water is choppy. I've gotten a hit on the toad runner but I lost the fish because I didn't wait long enough before setting the hook. I suck at frog fishing.

I was on holiday in Miami last summer and did some fishing off a pier by the port. Probably the best few hours fishing of my life. Caught 20 fish, almost all different species. Hooked something huge on a squid at about 9pm that stripped 60yrds of line before snapping it (100lb braid). Would be out there everyday if I lived there!

Though I don’t doubt that pointer can catch fishes when they are aggressive anyway. However, with your logic, why buy anything for an agressive fish when you can just use an spinnerbait

anyone know a good brand of trebel hooks that bend relatively easily? i want some that will bend out straight on a snag so i can still get my lure back but still strong enough that the fish wont get off

well, any who, if you're after small fish in small rivers (12 inches or less and a 30 foot cast is longer than you will ever make) watch for a cabelas CGR to go on sale, i reccomend the 2 weight. if you want to do something similar but want a little more casting range, buy a cabelas 3 forks/prestige plus in a 3 weight. if you are going to be fishing for bluegill or trout up to 15 inches, go for the same rod in a 4 weight. if you want a general rod, same rod, but 6 weight. if you want it for bass and carp, same rod, but 8 weight (with an air cel bass line, it's great for the money)

Any standard bass hook can be bend out with high enough test braid, even for good brand hooks. The "thicker" variation of the hooks (i.e. superline, 2x, 3x ,etc..) might be harder to be bent, but still possible for high enough test. Just remember to wrap it against something and pull instead of just using your hand or rod.

You don't want hooks that will bend because they'll do it at the worst possible time (which is when you have a nice fish on). Getting hung up and losing lures is just something that happens, you have to get used to it.

I guarantee you that 99% of the time you lose a lure, it’s stuck on a rock. Using 30lb braid and weedless Texas Rigs, you’ll get hung up on weeds but can rip it out. Get stuck under a rock? Say goodbye. Unless you can get around to the other side and wiggle it loose, there’s no way you’re getting it back

I know what you mean, Bass Pro has shit sales. Went to their big spring classic at the main store in Springfield, MO last week. Got some KVD sqarebills for $4.50 and some Rapala Shadow Raps and Brats for $6. Other than that, there weren't many good deals at all to be had. Was disappointed, thought there would be more.

The worst are the smaller branches that are small enough to move. Sometimes, especially jig fishing, you'll snag one of these and it will move and feel like a bite. Then you set the hook into it and that's it. Unless it's shallow enough to reel down to it the lure is gone forever.

Don't know how it is in your area, but the original Bass Pro in Springfield is basically a tourist attraction in and of itself. They don't put stuff on sale because they don't have to. Everytime I'm in there the place is slammed with out of state fudds buying stuff without a care in the world. I only go there for a select few things. Everything else I need is cheaper at Academy, TW, and even Walmart. Can't shop at Dick's anymore either since they just took a shit on the 2nd Amendment.

They've been trash since sandy hook. The only reason I buy stuff from there occasionally is because they do have really good deals every once in awhile, but I probably won't be buying shit from there anymore.
