Hey /out/! Going to Yellowstone this summer for some car camping and want a good point and shoot to take some pics. Any recommendations on /out/ approved cameras? My trusty old circa 2007 coolpix caught a cold and froze to death on a trip this winter.

Otherwise don't even bother with a camera.
Spend your money on an iPhone or something.

I personally have a Canon Powershot . The 30x zoom is kick ass, i take pictures of many things from afar without spooking them, the camera itself is pretty small in my opinion. Not flat like your old one.

I've had it for about a year now, and it hasn't done me wrong. I'm clumsy with my hands so this camera was a boon. Shame for the lens.

I have an old Olympus Stylus TG-830 that I use for my dive camera and general outdoor pocket cam. I love it.

Maybe for street photography but for outdoors I want a better zoom to zoom in on critters.

I'm not OP so I couldn't, but I think it's a pretty common desire in an /out/ camera, Hell even when I'm shooting street stuff I sometimes want to zoom in on architectural details or shoot from a quarter mile away to compress the perspective.

Just passing through here but I personally find my zoom (50-200mm) lens useless /out/ and I never bring it with me anymore. Maybe it's because I primarily am out in forested areas but there ain't enough visibility to use the zoom in a forest. Now maybe innadesert or inna-above-the-treeline it has some purpose but even then you're generally getting landscapes and closeups I reck'n.

Your camera is used software made blur for hiding sensor artifactation and noise. Here sampled in reverse, but exaggerated for its effect.

wow thats really funny i have that exact cam OP, the Olympus TG-5 for my day job. its fucking incredible man, i really recommend it for the price, and how tough that thing really is

-lightwight
-starts really fast
-tough as nails
-image quality is great
-only tough cam on the market to shoot RAW, so image quality just got 4x better

>cons
-noise is pretty noticeable in dark areas
-distortion around edges gets bad with fine details
