Skip the goretex because it takes days to dry without a constant firepit or radiator, just get quick-dry boots
Boots over sandals or open toe shoes, since you're much better having just one load of water rather than filtering 10000 litres of filthy water past your feet every day
Oh and wear leggings under your shorts to protect from leeches, I don't care if you think it's gay. Try it and you won't go back.
And unironically, trekking poles can really help in mud if you have your gun on your back - your pack will be heavy with gun+ammo, so you'll be thankful for the extra points of contact when you're top heavy and navigating slippery logs and rocks and muddy embankments. Don't cheap out and get 1 pole, get 2 or you'll experience spinal torque, postural imbalance and shoulder/wrist strain which will affect shooting.
Hammocks are best
Step ON not OVER logs to give yourself a chance to back out if there's a snake camping on the other side
Never put your hand on the blind side of a tree or branch, always grab the area you can see. Thorns, snakes, insects, mushrooms, frogs are a bitch
Watch your footing in swamps. Jagged tree roots can grow upwards like spikes under the water. You want grippy shoes with a good feel rather than rock solid, tough shoes.
Honestly, trail runners might be better than boots for the quick-dry, flexibility and dirt-cheap price across vietnam
And finally, do what the locals do when it comes to insect repellant, but don't copy their barefeet or sandals, especially not in sewage filled streets
