What does /out/ drive? I'm moving from a city with not a lot of /out/ and healthy public transit to a city with a LOT of /out/ within 1-3hr drive and have close to zero knowledge about cars besides how to drive stick and how to change fluids

so looking for /out/spo. is 4wd a meme or is it really necessary to tackle rougher roads? my state (oregon) has a ton of old forest service and logging roads I'd like to be able to explore

2004 honda crv. 30 mpg, holds a fuckton but small enough to park easily, and surprisingly capable; it's gotten me 15+ miles up forest roads in the sierra without a second thought.

good tires make a big difference
I rely on trucks for my normal operations
I have both 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive. and a van

locked differentials are for some serious hardcore rigs. mud trucks and rock crawlers but maybe don't want to drive like that all the time

is 4 wheel drive absolutely necessary?
depends on your situation
also don't forget a shovel

If you're just looking to get to the trailhead 2wd is fine.
I've been on the FS roads in WA and OR and 4wd is nice but good ground clearance is what's most important.
I did the majority of my /out/ stuff in an old 90s Chevy sedan, including some light off-roading, and it did fine because it had FWD, 16 inch wheels and a high ride.
If you want to go proper off-roading/mudding then yes you'll need 4wd.

I live in Northern Michigan (the lower peninsula) and they sometimes don't plow our street in the winter so you pretty much have to have a 4x4 truck with some clearance if you want to get in and out on those days. Also I have a relative who works for Ford so I got a pretty big employee discount.

Not a bad truck but I don't think I've done much /out/ stuff with it that I couldn't have done with a normal 2 wheel drive 4 door sedan. Once when I went on a multiple day cross country trip to visit relatives I threw some sleeping pads, bags, etc in the back and slept in the bed a few nights while travelling. With the big oversized cap on the back it was actually really comfy.

I drive a Tacoma. Would highly recommend for outdoor activities, especially with a camper shell. It's arguably the most reliable truck on the market, and also gets better mileage than a full size truck. 4Runners are also a good option. Like other anons have said, 2wd is fine for most forest roads. I have 4wd, and rarely ever use it, but I am glad that I have it when I do use it though. Assuming you're getting a truck or SUV, definitely put some good all-terrain tires on there.

there has been times on maintained traveled daily gravel roads that I felt like if I stopped my 2 wheel drive Chevrolet I will possibly have some trouble

4x4 helps offroad. Good tires helps more.
Don't have to use it, but it's real nice to have. Don't think i'd ever own a 4-wheeled vehicle that didn't have that option.

Me too. Definitely better offroad than a full size truck, better mileage, crazy good in snow with goodyear duratracs. This is taken on a power line acess road in BC

are there any smaller trucks around? my friend has an F150 and I've shopped around for others, the smallest newer one seems to be the Tacoma and that's still really big. I'm kind of skeptical of mpg with giant rigs. I have only really looked at ford and toyota though

I hear you all on tires though! I will definitely budget for all terrain tires while shopping, since I'm assuming that's something that won't come stock

4wd is a big meme outside of off-roading and racing. 99+% of people who have it, got it for no reason other than because their car dealer/friend told them to get it. It makes you 0% safer driving on icy roads as you always break with 4 tires and steer with 2. The only benefit is you can get more power in slippery conditions, so are less likely to get stuck. Make sure you put on proper winter tires, all season tires are shit all year round.

thank you for demonstrating you have no fucking idea what you're talking about so we know to disregard everything you say. fwd, rwd, and awd all perform very differently in slippery conditions.

There's two really good websites, car complaints and repairpal, where you can look up common issues, owner complaints, TSBs, recalls, etc.
They cover pretty much everything since the early 90s pretty comprehensively.
