Anyone here into kayaking?
I live in a shit tier state for land related outdoor activites but i live very close to the water so i figured if kayaking is worth it? What are some good entry brand kayaks to look at? Do i want sit in or sit on?

find a rental company and try it out before you drop a few hundred bucks on one.

i prefer sit on for tooling around the bay or estuary. but be ready for the incoming on vs in shitstorm that shows up in every kayak thread.

I love kayaking, my old town used to have it everywhere for just $5 an hour. But I'm moved into the a big city now and it's not as prevalent.

I love sit-in kayaks. I usually sit with my legs crossed/Indian style, and the sit-on ones don't really seem to allow for that.

Not kayak related but not worth making a separate thread.

Is spending the money on an ultralight canoe the only option for reliable water transport in areas that require hiking to get to the water? Specifically regarding the Adirondack region? Looking at Adirondack canoe company right now as my first choice when I make my decision next month. Quite a few different builders in the area but for the price it seems like the best option. If anyone has any insight on the topic let me know

No shit it’s obviously possible to fish out of but I don’t think it’s a very good idea to choose an inflatable raft when it’s main purpose will be fishing. Might last what? 3-4 years then you have to start worrying about popping from the sun deteriorating the material as well as normal wear and tear that would occur while attempting to pack it through the woods repeatedly. Not to mention it doesn’t make any logistical sense as to how I would be able to carry both a raft pack as well as my camping pack.

I guess I answered my own original question. Ul canoe seems to be the only viable option

Looks pretty interesting. Costs more than the ultralight canoe I have in mind though so it wouldn’t make much sense to go with this over a solid built canoe

I love my Eagle Run. Being sit inside instead of sit on top means that I can stretch out paddling season when the water gets colder. Just bought a fish finder for it last month, currently figuring out the best way to mount it

Used to be pretty heavily into whitewater paddling, but I slipped a disc (unrelated) and ended up selling my boats. My back's a lot better than it was, but I have yet to get back in a kayak. As far as sit-in vs sit-on, it all depends on what you want to do and where you want to go. (also if you want to be able to roll)
My advice for buying is to lurk craigslist and gear swap forums. Boatertalk and Mountainbuzz both let people sell their used gear on their forums; those are geared mostly toward WW boats, though. I'm sure you could find their equivalent for touring/sea/surf boats.
Quality used gear is cheaper, often in fine shape, and will better serve you than buying a shit "entry-level" brand.

You could probably get a cheap one off craigslist before you start spending real money on it, its a bit expensive for a good one. Atleast in Norway. Pic related met a deer migrating by sea when out fishing.

I would rather J stroke in a canoe than kayak. It's annoying being in that uncomfortable seat low to the ground and constantly getting drips of water on you from when you raise your paddle above your level. Those little drip stop things never work. You can make your own canoe pretty easily by printing out templates and cutting some plywood and using zip ties and kevlar and resin to seal the joints then painting the whole thing.

I have the desire and resourcefulness. Partially because I'm trying to avoid spending a grand for something I'm not going to use all the time. I live in Northeast Ohio, and my particular area isn't loaded with good kayaking spots. That said, I would like to be able to pack one out on a trail and kayak down river. I'd like something that can break down into a small size, and I'm less concerned about weight (grown ass man here).
