Here's how u save some money

Now throw the rope over the branch of a tree and hoist up the bag containing your food and deoderant/toothpaste/whatever else you brought that smells enticing to bears. Do this 1/8 or a 1/4 a mile from camp
If you don't have trees nearby, you aren't usually worrying about bears

I like the BearVault BV450 Solo. Just enough space for one person's food for a few days /out/ and it's not too big and awkward to pack around.

I tend to think of canisters as a general critter deterrent, not just bears. I've had more problems with rodents and raccoons than I have had with bears.
