A certified instructor isn’t going to compromise your safety and you’ll figure out what you do and don’t really need to own as you gain familiarity with diving. This isn’t a hobby to cheap out on when it comes to anything involving life support. All the other fancy bells and whistles come down to personal preference.

Also, keep yourself and your equipment streamlined while in the water. Don’t let your gear dangle freely to get caught on rocks, break things, or get full of mud.
There are a million things to say to a new diver, but I trust your instructor to cover the vital stuff.
