i need a budget hatchet/tomahawk and a fixed knife (exept for mora) to fill up my backpacking list. What does /out/ recommend?

just grab a cold steel trail hawk and a Schrade knife. that's about as budget as i can think of

if you want to go for an actual axe look at cold steels trail boss, same price as pic related.

just understand a lot more can go wrong with an axe than a tomahawk.

Anything sold at local shops and redneck fairs in the countryside. This is what was always bought and used for /out/ing. For things you want to use them for, they're more than suited, and saves you a ton of money that would otherwise be wasted on hatchets and knives that do same fucking thing but cost $10000 more because of clever marketing ploy targeted at gullible hipsters.

I've got a bolo machete from them that's worked great for cutting small trees and processing/splitting logs. The edge doesn't last super long but I also don't put a lot of energy into sharpening it

Hultafors makes budget knives along the lines of a Mora. I've got a GK from them in my car-trunk kit that is decent. They make hatchets and axes too but I can't speak to them.

If you don't have specific needs or specifications that you've derived FROM EXPERIENCE USING OTHER KNIVES then a mora or other generic outdoor knife is gonna be FINE for what you need.

One of the best budget knives you can get is the Varusteleka Jääkäripuuko, i have used and abused that knife and i love it. Cold Steel hatchets are fine for a budget one. My loadout consists of a Gränsfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, a Fällkniven A1 and a Ahti Vaara puukko. It's not budget but man, i don't need anything else.

Hardware store hatchets are fine if you can look through them yourself. Fiskars X7 is generally an easy buy for a good quality hatchet, though it's plastic handled.

Gerber Strongarm is a decent tough small fixed knife, though if you've got the hatchet, a larger folder would probably be better for knife tasks.

What tools do you need? Huntsman/Fieldmaster are some of my favorites, but they might be just above your price point. The scissors and small saw are nice to have though. If you dont need the saw then the Super Tinker/Climber. Dont need the scissors then the Camper/Hiker. the SAKWiki might help you though some models they list are rare. I say stick with the 91mm models and up

I recently started collecting Victorinox knives so I've put a little too much thought into which I want to carry. Think about what tools you want then try to find the smallest model with those tools.

Question. I can get a Cold Steel Pipe Hawk, Trail Hawk, or Rifleman's Hawk for roughly $15. Or I can get a CRKT Trail Hawk or a generic Half-Hatchet or fiberglass-handled camp axe for basically $5.

Which way do I go? What are the main differences between the Cold Steel offerings? Which hawk is going to serve me as a reliable tool and/or weapon that won't explode apart on the first full strength strike?

I have a stainless mora in my emergency pocket for the mountain.

I recommend a Cold Steel or CRKT hawk just to start and a good folder like a Spyderco to cut food and slice. If you want something tankier and don't want a morakniv or a Hultafors then get a cheap Cold Steel, CRKT, OKC, etc... to have fun.

Leave this board, Micky. Never come back. This is my trail hawk with a red Sedona finish on the handle and an apple cider vinegar boiled patina on the hilt. Light striping was done with mustard/white vinegar for 20 min.

First i wrapped a 550 cord soaked in vinegar around the head. didn't work out too well, gave it a very ugly brown patina. so i boiled a pot of apple cider vinegar and dunked it fully inside for an hour. after that, i pulled it out., and using a mixture of about 3/4s mustard and 1/4 white vinegar, i made stripings with a q-tip down the head and wrapped it in seran wrap on both sides for 20 minutes.

Can't get more budget than an m48 tomahawk clone, which is most likely made in the same factory. Light, cheap and chews through wood.
You can just wrap the handle in Fiber Fix if you're concerned about it being plastic.

I’d never take it outside or sharpen it for fear of destroying its value, and then what good is it?
A plain old Buck Pathfinder or Ka-Bar would be far more likely to actually be used without every little scratch or ding making my right eye twitch uncontrollably.

For those recommending cold steel. Be careful of quality complaints. Read a lot about the heads not being flush with the handles. CRKT had the same complaints too.

The handle pins are hex-head Chicago screws. I replaced the rubber scales with wooden ones that fit my hand better, and in order to accommodate the original hex bolts, I had to overdrill the wood slightly. This, combined with the fact that the new wood is thicker than the old rubber (to better fit my hand) meant that you could feel the holes when gripping the wood.
So I filled the holes with epoxy.

The end result is a much, much more comfortable knife in the hand.
