europoor here, i have a question for yall: how do you protect yourselves from tick bites? one time i was napping while /out/ and i saw a tick as big as a nail on my leg, bruned it with a lighter.
another time i found a tick on myself very close to my ass two days after i got back home.
I'm afraid of those things, is there a way to be 100% safe from them?

Can't you just pull them out? I've heard about it not being possible because if you tear their body(generally their head stays) they can release diseases in your blood stream. Is that correct?

You can just pull them out. If the head pulls off it can cause an infection as it rots in the skin but I've never had a problem with that.

Anon, I use Permethrin on all my clothes and gear. I mix in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Get a product that says you can mix it with methylated spirits (denatured alcohol). This way it penetrates everything really well and dries fast. One application should last several washes. The product I am using is a rinse that you can apply to dogs and horses. Permethrin kills cats dead, be careful not to let yours near wet product or gear that has been treated.
The great thing about Permethrin is it kills ticks, not just repels them. I used to find ticks crawling on me and my gear when out but don't see them anymore. DEET is nice but not as effective. Once the metho has evaporated the Permethrin doesn't have an odour.

This, although I've had a lot more on some trips. You'll almost always notice it if there's ticks in the area. Give yourself a quick check every evening and pull them off with a pincer (I usually just use my nails.
Don't buy into some of the weird tricks about spinning them around, rubbing alcohol on them or burning them off. This will only increase the risk of infection. Remember that even IF a tick has a nasty decease it will have to stay attached to you for some time before the infection can spread.

Damn. Ok, that would actually make me a bit paranoid. I live in Scandinavia and although we've recently gotten some new and nasty tick disease that doesn't show you contract it still takes those 12-24 or something hours to spread.

I go the exact opposite route. Socks no higher than my boots or shoes and shorts. Ticks rarely bite lower extremities and long pants just give them a place to hide and crawl up. Also nightly tick checks are key. As soon as I feel a tick on my leg I pick it off and kill it. I've spent the last 9 summers living 10+ weeks out side each summer and I haven't got Lyme's yet. And yes Lyme's is in my area.

Also I rarely if ever use bud spray/lotion. I used to use it and would find ticks on myself later anyway. So I just decided to skip it and be vigilant instead. Btw if nobody said it yet a tick has to be attached for somewhere around 24 hrs to transmit tick born diseases. At least that's what I've been told by medical professionals that I trust.

yes because there's some magic number of bacteria, protein etc that is not harmful at all. It's more like you are consuming below the government set standards for heavy metals in drinking water, it might not have consistent observable effects across a population but that doesn't mean it isn't bad for you.

Actually it has more to do with the tick. It might take a tick a some time to find a spot and a few more hours to burrow in before it can feed. Once the tick has gorged itself it regurgitates waste into the bite, this is when/how tick-born diseases spread. This typically takes around 24 hours to happen. I didn't come up with this number, this is the generally understand guideline for medical personnel regarding tick bites and tick-born illnesses.

i work outdoors full time as a gardener in the northeast and i usually get <10 ticks a year without deet/permethrin. even when i find them on me they usually haven't bitten me yet. i eat a shit ton of garlic and onions and do a tick check everyday after work. the anon who said that if you get them off in less than 24 hours you won't get lyme is right

You will see that only 1% of ticks that attach transmit the decease. And that is only if they stayed attached for days. And they can crawl on you for a day or more before finding a good spot to attach them selves. So when you calculate the chance of you spotting them before they attach, the chance of removing them on the first day if they do attach, and the 1% chance of transmission if you fail to feel him for a long time, you would see that the final chance of infection is stupidly small.

i'm outdoors and have been bit by ticks and got Lyme and/or co-infections. Its a SERIOUS disease like AIDS/Syphilis, if you do not treat it immediately. The disease is caused by a bacteria group called spirochetes and there are at least 5 known Lyme-like diseases. The problem is that the tests have a 60% failure rate and it could take years (3-10) before your body even develops the antigen to test positive. If you get bit by a tick, even if you have no symptoms, you must take antibiotics for 3 weeks. The reason is, the bacteria can hide in your body for years (some cases 15 years) before you get sick. The doctors won't be able to help because you will come back with a negative test result. Eventually after the third growth cycle, it will penetrate the blood brain barrier and get inside your head. At that point, you are in serious trouble. The science behind treating this disease is really behind. Most doctors will refuse to treat it or deny you have it at this point. The protocol at this point is antibiotics everyday for 10 months (or longer based on a lyme specialist doctor called a LLMD). Usually Doxycycline, or Monocycline, but Amoxicillian also works. Doxy does not cross the blood brain barrier very well but amox/mono does. That and herbs such as Cat's Claw and recently they discovered good evidence that Stevia whole leaf extract (not processed) in combination with antibiotics. You should do everything you can to prevent to get bit. Because if you let it grow inside you, you will go through hell before the doctors figure it out -- sometimes people have to go to dozens of doctors before going to a LLMD or waiting years until their immune system creates the marker for a positive lyme test. The best method for prevention is buying 34% Pyreitherin and diluting it down, and doing all of your laundry with it. Buy Cat's Claw in bulk and 500mg animal antibiotics and have enough for 3 years.

For the most part, as long as you check yourself at the end of everyday you should be fine. Most tick-borne diseases take some time to transmit to the host. Lyme takes at least 48 hours of being embedded to transmit. There are dozens of different strains of Lyme too and only some of them cause symptoms (though this is still being researched).

The less time the tick has been in your skin the easier it is to pull out.

Ticks follow a specific life cycle. Spring time is when you need to be most vigilant because that’s when nymphs are seeking a host. Nymphs are the second smallest stage and are much harder to find than adults. Nymphs are also the first stage of the cycle which able to carry Lyme because they revive the disease from a host. It is not passed down from mother to eggs so larvae cannot have Lyme. Larvae are also rare and normally localized to one area. You’ll know when you find them because after walking through a nest of larvae you’ll have several to a few dozen on you. Adults can carry Lyme if the nymph’s host is infected they’re so large that it’s hard NOT to feel them when they’re crawling on you unlesss you’re really oblivious.

Weather also effects the activity of ticks. Once the temperature has gone below freezing for at least two days, most adult ticks will have gone to ground and be significantly less active. However, on days where the temperature stays above freezing, the ticks come back out. Snow cover also forces the ticks to go to ground. Rain will also decrease their activity.

Tldr; only have to worry about nymphs from spring to early summer and then adults in the fall. Check yourself everyday and you’ll be fine.

I deal with ticks by staying the fuck away from them. Luckily I live out west so ticks are fairly rare in the first place, go away by August and my state has never had a reported case of Lyme disease.

That said, I'm going to be in in NH in the third week of June for a wedding so I'll already feeling paranoid.

Permethrin your clothes

Check the back of your knees, your inner thigh, behind your ears, your scalp, your taint when you come to rest
Don't freak out if you're bitten, if you notice and deal with it quickly the infection rate is tiny
Don't burn or pinch them off as it will cause them to vomit into the wound
Remove the proboscis barb if it breaks off
Make a "tick pen" with an empty pen tube and a loop of thread through it, so you can lasso the tick and pull the end to tighten the thread around it, then gently twist the tick a little and firmly, slowly pull it off. Then crush its head and put it in a ziplock so you can take it to a doctor if you're paranoid or show any symptoms.
Light coloured clothing shows up ticks
Shake and brush yourself down at every rest stop
Full clothing coverage is better than any repellant, you get used to wearing trousers in the summer (they can actually be cooler)
Ticks can jump down from overhanging foliage, this is common in Aus
Leaf litter, long grass, brush, etc all hide ticks in certain seasons, so check yourself after going through these sections
You need to kill ticks if you brush them off - they'll fall on the floor, gather their senses then run back to you if you stay in the same place for a while.
Check your dogue regularly too

Learn what to do if you're infected (some diseases will just go away after a bout of upset stomach etc if your immune system is good)
Sterilise the wound after you've been bitten, if you scratch and gouge at it it will get infected.
If you scratch uncontrollably in your sleep, make sure you put a plaster or gymnast/hockey/leukotape over the area at night.

Don't let these little buggers ruin the outdoors for you! They might have picked up some more diseases in the last century, but people have successfully dealt with ticks with far less information and gear than we have.

I've tried everything and nothing works. Deet? might deter them from biting but the way they work is hanging on low branches or tall grass waiting for something to latch onto so they don't tend to give a shit about the smell of their prey despite bug spray marketing.

the best method is not having any loose or easily accessible opening on your clothes, meaning elastics on your pants and elastics on your sleeves. especially in early spring.

having a full length mirror or a buddy give you a once over after being out for a while is also good.

fuck lyme disease.

Burning is very effective. Heat a short peice of wire or the tip of a penknife with a lighter, hot enough that it would burn flesh. Lay it across the body of the tick. It drops off immediately. I've removed many this way.
