Using "outdoor" equipment rather than milsurp. For example, I used a jack wolfskin berkeley for years, sweating like hell and having the straps tie of my arms untill I tried a ten bucks BW pack. Never used the berkeley since. Same with clothes and sleeping mats.
confusing victorinox and wenger and accidentally getting a piece of shit "swiis knife" rather than a good multitool. Always make sure that the cross is on a shield rather than a square.
way to stiff boots. My first pair of trekking boots was bought by my parents back when I was still a kid, and I kept using the same kind of heavy, way to stiff boots afterwards. While those are extremely comfortable especially on rocky terrain, they are crap for harder terrain since your feet can't feel the ground. Switched to Lowa Renegades and never looked back.
Getting a cheap compass (one of the ones where the magnet balances on a needle instead of swimming in oil). Ended up walking NNE while thinking I was going E for half a day because my compass wouldn't turn properly - while it did turn far enough for me to think that it would show true north, it always ended up stuck at the same point.
Behaviour:
Not keeping a weapon at the ready. two dog attacks later I'm always carrying my gun with me. I'll never understand why peope let their dogs loose and out of sight when those dogs will attack people without any warning.
Not checking my knife after every hard stretch. Once I had to go back two kilometers cross country searching for it, I learned.
