What is your favorite type of shelter?

For me there is no other options than tarp. Lightweight, versitile and fast to build. Perfect for almost every situation. Tarp with hammock is also pretty comfy if there are trees.

All I own is a tent, bought to fit two people. I'm starting to get curious about tarps and bivys and shit for when I'm /out/ alone, since it's kind of ridiculous to haul around a groundsheet/inner/outer/pole setup for two people with plenty of headroom, when I'd be satisfied sleeping in a nylon coffin. Somebody educate me about setting up tarps in stormy conditions.

Bivy is overrated. Coffin sleeping is fine but it needs to breathe so you don't suffocate. Airflow = water access so you need a tarp for that anyway and a ground cloth as well generally if you don't want to tear up your Bivy too quickly.

Tarps are cumbersome water magnets I find difficult to pack down. I want better insect control and animal proofing personally. So instead I'm warming up to larger multi-man tents. Fits more gear than miserable 1-mans, a space buffer at night too. More bulk but tents are pretty light

No if you are not in the pit. You dont want to be in the pit anyways even if you have tent with groundsheet. Just make sure to go with full closed design if there is heavy wind or rain.

Tarp+Hammock+buggo netto works well for me. My wife hates camping like that so i have to use a bitch ass Coleman tent if she comes. I have tried many times to explain to the woman that being above predators is a huge advantage but she doesnt care. Wants to cuddle. Fucking women.

I have begun analyzing my different shelter experiences lately to find the best hybrid solution. There seem to be three main factors of consideration; bugs, precipitation, and ground contact. Bugs require netting since a completely closed environment will suffocate. Precipitation requires some type of waterproof top layer and ground contact is about protecting yourself and your gear from the cold rough earth. So long as a shelter system has these things you will be ok. Ideally a "perfect" system would combine them all into a form that is most convenient and versatile for your personal situation. I moved from a tent to a tarp to a hammock to a Bivy and now am back to tent. There is a reason they have been used since forever.

I am attempting to create a custom bivy/tent that incorporates the rollout convenience of a bivy sleep system with the universally incorporated protections of a tent. Will be a basic A frame made from tyvek and duct tape with a bathtub base and screened ends. The sleeping pad and blanket/bag will be incorporated inside and it will all fold flat and roll up. Just finished the designs and need to order the tyvek.

You dont necessarily need ground cloth if you have good sleeping pad. Some pads have this extra waterproof fabric that you can fold away if you dont need it. It makes pad a lot wider so you dont roll off accidentally.

I carry lightweight gore-tex bivy with me anyways so it does not really matter to me if the ground is wet or not. I dont have to setup tarp at all if i dont want to.

It is possible but not ideal. Obviously you want more space to do shit and not just lie in the same position. Tarp works just fine and is much cheaper than decent lightweight tent. My backpack is waterproof too but i still want to cover it somehow.

When the weather is good and no bugs its comfy to sleep under stars. Bivy is also usefull when the weather is too hot to sleep in my down sleeping bag.

When you are attempting to conclude the most effective, efficient, and versatile shelter system you must provide all three protections. That is not to say that a system designed for a particular scenario couldn't be viable and more convenient but if we are talking about what makes a universally effective shelter then all three considerations must be taken into account. You could even add a fourth consideration which would be wind to be really complete since just having a tarp over you at a shallow angle with cold wind taking all your heat and working through you bag would be unpleasant.

That depens how you buld your tarp shelter and where you live. In my country there are no poisonous fuckers that can crawl in to bite you so you are pretty much good to go if you can keep mosquitos out. And when you are in your sleeping bag you dont need to worry about other than your face anyways. Easy to cover with some net.

Here is good design to keep flying bugs and water out. You can seal the sides with some dirt if you think they come under it.

I guess if biting insects aren't an issue then you don't need to worry about netting. But most places seem to have something along those lines to worry about. And they always find a way in. The tarp setup you linked is not really unique or new as far designs are concerned and it still doesn't address the ground cover. If you aren't worried about bugs getting in then a basic A frame style tarp shelter seems more effective and efficient than what was made and gives ground cover when done on all three sides. But if that is your shelter, what happens when you camp somewhere with bad mosquitoes? I mean you can always just have both and bring whichever you needed but a universally reliable solution seems logical.

Duly noted but what you seem to be saying is that you do not have a standalone shelter solution that covers all the bases. So I guess the implication would be that in order to be prepared for all potential outcomes you are going to be bringing a tarp, bug net, and hammock instead of just bringing a tent. I respect your ability to choose the multi item option but when objectively looking to select the most effective, versatile, and simple solution it seems the tent wins hands down. A simple one man tent also takes literal seconds to set up whereas setting up a tarp, hammock, and bug net is exponentially more involved.

Weight and volume is pretty much same as tent in same price range. I also do winter trips where tarp is pretty much only option if you want to warm your shelter with campfire. I know its not for everyone but i like my setup.

Tarp, bugnet and hammock is infinitely more versatile than a tent. With a tent you have a tent. You can set it up and sleep in it, you could sleep on it, or you could not set it up and sleep in it. That’s pretty much it. With a tarp, bugnet and hammock, I can sleep on the ground, off the ground, block the wind a million ways, sleep next to a fire, cook in bed, leave the bugnet at home during the winter, rock just the hammock and bugnet in summer, etc etc etc. plus you can make a dyneema composite fiber tarp and hammock for a few hundred bucks and carry them around in your cargo pockets.

But if working for a MOUT-focused unit in the military tought me one thing, it's that abandoned buildings make very nice shelters when you're tired. As long as they haven't been used by drug addicts, who leave weird stuff like a bill (money) on a human turd in the middle of the floor in one of the rooms

The point of contention is just that a small tent is a solution that is more universally applicable and simpler to use. You can't always be sure of the variables on a trek and will have to prepare for all of them anyway. So yes. Sure. You can bring three separate items that allow you to be versatile in your setup. But when in the most demanding shelter situations and need it the most I would wager you would rather not be dealing with setting up a three part system. At least in my own experiences I have always been jealous of the dude in the group who was set up and was dry and cozy the fastest. That is what has driven my own exploration of different shelter styles.

Square. 3x3 meter is usually optimal for 1-2 people. 3 people may be possible but is pushing it. Get one with as many attatchment points as possible and memorize at least a few different pitches for different situations. There are dozens of specialty pitches but honestly all you really need to know to get you through most situations are lean-to, a frame, Holden, and diamond fly.

The nice thing about that system is that all the bags and bivy snap together so it becomes one giant sleeping bag. If you aren't taking maximum advantage of the system you are probablly better off buying something else and get better bang for your buck. If you could get just the bivy for real cheap I would say go for it but we are talking like 20 bucks otherwise just spend more for better. Not that anon though so can't talk to the proper use statement.

Didnt you make a thread about that topic? We told you that its fuckheavy and that for 180 dollars youll get much better stuff even in surplus range. Bivi bag is ok, but even that just if you can get it for really cheap. For 180 dollars you could get a bivi, sleeping bag and probably a wool blanket to top it off seperately and would still be lighter and maybe have even some sparechange for something else.

Hello anons, military guy here,
I will soon be sent to a shithole in the middle of africa for 4-5 months, temperatures there go from 110 °F during the day to 5-10°F during the coldest part of night.
There might be some nights when I'll be able to use a hammock, but most of the time i'll be freezing my ass in the dust-filled moutain winds.
Considering that the standard military tent in my country is utter crap, what would you recommend, knowing that it would need to be :
- 4 seasons
- waterproof, because i will also use it when going camping in my (very humid) country
- wind resistant
- fast to set up and fast to take apart, i'm especially interested in tents with a clip-on body (no sleeves for the poles)
- large enough to fit my pack, or have a vestibule.
- tan colored, or easily camouflaged.
price is not really an issue

So far, the only tent I have seen fitting all of this is pic related, as well as the Sabre SE (also by nemo) and the Moutain Hardwear Hunker (discontinued), but I would like your advice.

tl;dr : what is the best military 4 seasons tent you know of, anons ?

I don’t know a tent, but I have some advice: to dry out condensation from your tent, get an UCO lantern - the heat will stop runoff and it’s a cosy way to light and warm your tent. Good luck on deployment anon

if you are hot and super bundled up when you get in, there is more of a chance that you will sweat because the gore tex also traps quite a bit of heat. the sweat turns to more moisture and then condensation in the bag. getting in cold, and gradually warming up with the bag is preferable as it will lead to less sweating and condensation

Most tents (especially non-free standing) are pretty much a specialty tarp + bug net.

In buggy climates a tarp is just not going to compete with that. I'd much rather wake up to a symphony of insects crawling on my net than my face.

I am the anon from this post >>1224658 and I have used this tent multiple times, it has the same problem as most french equipment : its heavy, it's bulky, and it's made from a waterproof poly-coated fabric very prone to cracking along the folding edges and at the seams.
It's also supposed to handle strong winds, but the 2 poles are very unstable and will drop the tent on you quite easily, I usually replaced them with my own poles that I drove 1 ft into the ground.

Hammock due to its versatility as long as there are adequate trees. I can use it to sit and sleep in. I can use it by itself when the bugs aren't out, with a bug net, with a tarp, bug net and tarp combo. I sleep better in a hammock in 20 degrees than my bed at home.

The Hilleberg Akto could be a posiblility. Although it does use sleeves it only has one pole and is very light and compact while still giving you a vestibule which IMO is invaluable in very wet weather.

Another aussie here.
For years as a teen a ground tarp and a cover tarp was all I used for camping. As long as you stay away from ant nest the animals and insects leave you alone mostly.
