Climbed this in summer of 2002 with my brother and friend from our street. We were just teenagers and it was a youth group thing. We started with like 15 people and it whittled down to about 7 at the end. It was hard but a lot of fun. I will never forget how far you could see at the top. There were forest fires way off in the distance we could see. I had canned chicken and took a dump at the top, there were strange crickets up at the top and I took some of the flowers back to my mom and GF at the time. I wonder if my mom still has them. We did the hike in a day which is hard to do apparently, if i tried it now I wouldnt make it. Good memories.

Longs is a bit more than a hike, it's not technical but there's a pretty good stretch of class 3 below the summit. There's also a risk for rock fall.

Everyone I know who does hiking and actual climbing just uses the latter to cover both bases as long as there’s a decent amount of ascent and scrambling involved. I don’t get the elitism around this, I guess it’s just /out/ being /out/.

Different anon. Elbert was my first 14'er too. I think I climbed it when I was 11 with my grandpa. I've climbed it 21 times since, mostly at night to watch the sunrise.

I'm a climber and I know a lot of other climbers, we use The word hike for hike and climb for climb.

We're not being elitist just accurately describing whats happening.

I'm British so we don't really have mountains by burger standards but Crib Goch in winter on the way to Snowden was the first hike I was proud of. Was spooky at the top, very exposed

My lecturer at university fell off the side of Crib Goch, tumbled 200ft, broke nearly everything and survived.

Great bit of rock - Britbong here too and although I've climbed loads of peaks in the Alps including Mt Blanc twice (once from the French side, once from Italy) plus quite a few other big peaks round the world I still have a love of Crib Goch especially in the winter.

Hiked up Snowden with my parents when i was about 6. Was during the summer so nice weather. We walked from Llanberris along the path of the train. My little brother was only 3 so him and my dad caught the train at the station halfway up while me my mum and older brother continued on. Felt p good getting to the top. Also for some reason loads of orthodox jews were climbing up in their full suit get up, very odd.

there's a reason we do that.
we don't want people thinking Leadville is a nice place to live. We're full. And we don't take kindly to attempts at gentrification even if it would make us wealthy. Because we'd rather live in Leadville surrounded by junk cars and literally toxic mine waste than have money and be stuck in your suburban dystopia.
We're weird like that.

on the plus side the road to Elbert runs through national forest, as do 80% of the roads in our county. So it's pretty short on yards or junk, and that's really the reason we live here. Drive 10 miles in any direction from Leadville and you're in the wilderness.

I was going to agree with you that hiking and climbing are two wholly separate things but he used the dictionary definition which also kinda helped your argument because climbing accurately describes how you ascended even withiut ropes.

I can climb a tree with or without ropes.
I can climb a mountain with or without ropes.
I can hike a mountain but if I choose to go off the trail and use my hands and feet to ascent the mountain is that not climbing?
Wouldn't a climber want to accurately describe when the climbing begins and stops?

Bald mountain in the High Uintas of Utah. It was 1987 and I was 6 years old. My old man made me do it. It’s actually an easy hike you can do under an hour but for a 6 year old it was rough. It was one of my best memories with my dad and I still hike it once a year.

Yes, I agree with everything you said.

I was in an argument with a stubborn tard, I was never able to progress to the point where the line starts to be blurred when you're scrambling/climbing or roped vs unroped.

I actually don't care what wordage people use for the most part. But when somebody is making the argument that you're a climber when you walk up stairs, somebody has to step in.

I love this thread mainly for the point that so many of us (as youths) climbed Longs Peak. I'm like many others here that doubt I would be able to make to the peak today; regardless if our Keyhole route and not the face. We're still 14ers right?

My climb started at 2:00 AM as part of a group from YMCA of the Rockies. We used to summer there every year. We did it in one day as well and were back down before the afternoon thunderstorms. I wonder how many of us have photos of Chasm Lake and nothing but our hiking boots hanging off the edge of the peak. Good times and this was in the early 80's.

I grew up in Nashua and went to Keene State, ascended Monadnock several times
