Did AT with my HLMG echo, finished hiking AT, and it's lasted me 3 more years of regular use... Apart from it looks like shit because it was white initially. The tarp itself isn't the thing that breaks, it's the bindings ect. And all that is reinforced on a decent tent.
My backpack got ruined by abrasions that wouldn't touch my granite gear pack that I use now though.
All matter of taste and luck though I guess.
