So I want to go Mushroom Hunting and look into local clubs in the D.C/NoVa area, perhaps in the Shenandoah area.
I figure with morels coming soon this would be a good place to start?
Any recommendations for good organizations to join?
This is one hobby I don't want to fuck around with, especially with the risk of getting poisoned.

There are tons of groups and organizations

Also besides the safety fact it is 100% more fun to go with a seasoned pro who can show you exactly what to look for and really open your eyes to different types of fungi.

You don't need to join a club. Google how to ID morels. They are one of the easiest mushrooms to properly ID. They are usually hard to find though so don't expect to go out and find any right away.

The easiest are clearly chanterelles. Nothing poisonous to misidentify as them.

OP, check out the book 'morels' by michael kuo, and 'the complete mushroom hunter' by gary lincoff. and relax and enjoy yourself. it's a great hobby. some of the best edibles are the easiest to ID. as are the most poisonous really.

Fair point. Still, "just pick the chanterelles until you know better" is the main thing you tell novice mushroom pickers where I am.

Then again, perhaps the general knowledge of mushrooms is greater here overall, as almost everyone has done it at some point.

Most mushroom poisoning happens to people taking shortcuts (such as not cross checking morphs or juvenile specimens when ID'ing their shooms and getting complacent. It does help to have others go with you to ID with so you are less likely to make mistakes.

For reference most mushrooms are not poisonous, 20% or so are not edible but not deadly poisonous and 1% are lethally poisonous.

Morels are hard to misidentify. Very distinctive, only false morels look similar and they're not hollow. They're a great place to start.

Nope.

Maybe this isn't the place to ask but I'm trying to learn tree identification, anyone have any tricks for some of the harder ones? Beech, birch, cherry, things like that are pretty easy once you've seen a couple but it's hard to tell the bark from oak, ash, elm, and tulip poplar apart for me.

I can't remember the author, but I have a good book on winter ID of trees (based on buds and bark). Probably lots of good books and online resources on this eg:

It's just a matter of practice and knowing what to look for. Start with the leaves and fruit/seeds first, then start paying attention to the bark and looking at the buds, branching pattern, habitat (eg ash in riparian areas), form etc.

I did a couple dendrology courses when I was an undergrad, it was a lot of fun and it's amazing how the knowledge has stuck. I'll walk in the forest and see a vaguely-familiar plant and the Latin name will pop in my head.

So many meth-heads and opiate junkies have literally scoured entire forest beds with rakes and hoes destroying the entire first layer of soil and roots to find truffles and morels. It's really sad, what was once an innocent past time hobby is now about to be destroyed.

I really hate this fucking state, amazing /out/door beauty and resources unlike anything in the world and it just get raped by the ignorant dumbfucks that live here and doing absolutely nothing to better the quality of life here. If its not coal or timber, there isn't anything safe from being fucked up here.

Foraging for Mushrooms, ginseng all used to be fun past times that could also net you a few bucks as a bonus to the fun of hunting.

Now its just overrun with junkies, for-profit poachers and whatnot.
Someone literally hired a platoon of min-wage Chinese farm hands/laborers to go ginseng and morel collecting.

I know a naturalist who gave a walk in a particular area and pointed out a massive ginseng colony, probably hundreds and hundreds of years old. A couple weeks later, every single plant was harvested.

It seems crazy to think of methheads combing the woods for mushrooms, but it is an easy source of seasonal income to support their habit. It's really sad to think they are now resorting to destroying the natural environment too (not just urban/populated areas).

I've heard West Virginia is beautiful, it's a shame about the coal mining and social issues. It could be heaven.

I knew Shroom dealers parked vans near forests and mountains and bought from people but didn't think it was getting that had. It used to be something backpackers, unemployed and travelers did to make some cash on the side. Sucks to hear meth addicts are fucking it up.

I'm a professional mycologist and the three things I hear from the public are: 1) dude magic mushrooms lol; 2) you must be a fun-guy; and, 3) is this edible (shows blurry photo of a white-capped mushrooms on their lawn).

Hey dude, join the mycological association of dc: MAW DC.

I was a member for a while, but then I moved to north maryland so the meetings are too far from where I am.

They have awesome talks/seminars every month, and frequently go out hunting with experts that can identify anything you bring them. Also, it's stupid cheap, like $25 for the year or something, and totally worth it because they also send you small mushrooms pamphlets made by members and its a super wholesome community of people.
