Is anyone into collecting rocks and minerals (rock hounding?)
I want to start and have been researching it myself for a bit but I wanted to see if you guys could recommend any gear, tips or general resources for a beginner

I feel like all the good stuff is on protected land. We were given a LOT of exemptions for "study" while a geology major, but ho boy, you can die for checking out someone's rocks in the real world.

Most of the good stuff is on private property or is mined. There is a limestone quarry not to far from here and it's such a shame. All the travertine, calcite, and fossils are turned into grounded rock for agriculture or roads. Last time I went, they had blasted open some caves and we were able to collect some stalactites n -mites. Nowhere else can you do that without it being illegal. Mariana limestone layer btw fellow geologists.

My program skimped on paleo, and focused more on mollusks and other animal fossils, not so much on plants. I couldn't tell you there was a trunk there as you described without first knowing what to look for. Sorry.

I started this about a year ago to get me /out/. The Sithsonian has a very good guide book you an get from Amazon for cheap. I'm looking for flint, but in MI we only have chert.

However, rock hounding creates a way of looking. I pay better attention when I walk on the beach or through the woods. Plus, that cool hammer is a babe magnet and can help you escape from prison if need be.

I'm a geophysicist but I've been on geological jobs. Basic equipment would be a hammer and 20X loupe. a notebook is good for recording what you found and where. I guess there are basic identification pocket books out there for minerals. a little water spray bottle can be useful for looking at rocks wet as well.

anyone else here try and make mortar/cement with limestone before? I burnt some stones from I scavenged and managed to make something that actually worked as mortar. I figure I could use it to build a really nice fireplace or raised bed for a garden, there is a shitload of the stuff in my area.
