/out/ what s your backpacking cooking setup?

I'm starting from scratch. Thinking about getting a BRS burner, JetFuel fuel cannister, and TOAKS titanium pot. Then just a plastic spork for utensil.

I figure I can stir my foods with a stick or something.

Thoughts?

That's the optimal setup for short trips, I'd go with a titanium wood burning stove for longer trips and shits and giggles.

When I want to get things hot, I just whip out the ol' pocket rocket. Ladies come from all around to comment on how perfectly it fits in their hand; just the right size.

I use an MSR Whisperlite.

i have a whole bunch of different stoves, because it's fun to burn things. feeding bits of wood into a stove is lots of fun. butane and propane are the most suitable for actual /ck/ cooking, petrol and kerosine are unbeatable for fast boiling or deep frying.

diesel was a mistake.

It will burn any fuel, my go to is gasoline since I have it on hand. Starting is easy once you figure out the tecnique. It's medium sized though.

not that much, because food you don't have to cook is usually bulkier than food you do

What if it's just hard cheese, protein powder, and ration bars? The few day hikes I've been on my friends all brought a stove and hot food, but I've always been content with dried food/fruit. I'm planning some overnight hikes but haven't been on one yet, though, so I'm wondering if this would still work well. Is it just up to personal preference if you want hot food?

a cheap trangia ripoff alcohol stove (cost me 1€, couldn't have built it that cheap) with homemade folding aluminium windshields. Also a 5€ USMC folding pan since that was the only stainless steel one I could afford back then and a knife and wooden spoon for eating.

Unless you're planning an arctic or alpine expedition, you're going to be overgeared with that stove. Alcohol stoves are smaller and use cheaper fuel.
Also, if I was you I'd ditch the spork for a knife + (wood or metal) spoon combo and use the spoon for stirring the food.

I made a little alco stove, what brought me back to the trangia burner is that you can actually pre load the burner with fuel, you can regulate heat, and you can quench the flames when you need to. also will hold a lifetime and likely my grandchildren will be able to get spare parts.

Came to the same conclusion, propane stoves, especially remote canister ones, are great for when you backpack multiple days in exposed areas where you really need to shelter inside your tent and cook in your porch.
for your normal bit of weekend camping a small alco stove is way more economical

This is going to sound stupid but can someone explain to me how Jet boil and other stoves like it work? I understand it's a fuel canister, but when it runs out of fuel then what? Can you refill it yourself with just a regular propane tank from home depot? Do you just toss the canister and buy a new one? Also how long does the fuel last?

I've had a wisperlight since the 90s and other than getting the new style pump it just keeps on chugging. For shorter trips or when I want less to plan I bring a jetboil.

You recycle the canister and buy a new one. A benefit here is that you can usually buy them where you end up if you are traveling to camp. Stoves that have permanent tanks don't get to go on planes.

I use the BRS stove and a small toaks pot. It works great but the arms are pretty thin. I only use it to boil no more than 2 cups of water so it’s perfect for that. If I wanted to cook with say a liter I would use my pocket rocket.
The BRS is a great stove, I don’t think you’ll regret it

i have that, I'm afraid to put gasoline in it though. So anyway I got this thing and 1/2 gallon of 91% alc. Test it out when it gets here. always just start a fire I guess.
