It sorta depends on what type of rig you have. Most saltwater stuff you make ahead of time when you have nothing else to do then clip on when you go out. Freshwater is really doesn't matter much since the rigs are wee tiny and not very complicated or long in comparison.

for trout mono is generally better because if you are using a small hook the stretch of the mono will do just a little bit to help keep constant gentle tension on the hook during headshakes, and for me at least i have to respool an ultralight 2-3 times a season from line twist and mono is just cheaper for that

It depends heavily on the lake. Unlike the other guy, I do far better right off the bottom in my area. Occasionally one will come through in midwater or right under the ice, but almost all activity is right on the bottom.

4 inch white tube jig is by far the most popular lure for them in my area and for good reason. I prefer a large unbaited jigging rap, though.

Get a flasher is definitely the best advice though.

Any of you guys ever magnet fish for lures? The past few days have been awful for steelhead, and every time I've gone out I've been compensating for the lack of fish by ripping down snagged lures from trees, which got me thinking about magnet fishing the major holes. I know I would get a lot of rusty hooks, but the lures I'll just replace the hooks and o rings. Most of my tackle isn't my own so why not get more? Pic related was all found this year ice fishing my local bass ponds.

Poke hole in corn can the size of a piece of corn. Chuck in water where you wanna fish. Give it a week. Go back and start fishing the water with a hook sinker and a piece of corn. Let it almost hit the bottom. drop shot 1-3 inches hook float depending on the conditions of the bottom.

Source old Fisher man taught me this. Never did it because fuck catfish and carp. Garbage fish.

Water temps are still in the low 40's and it's a big deep lake. I bought a 50lb bag of corn and just started chumming on Friday. Hopefully they start associating the area with food again. I chummed it at the start of November when temps were in the low 50's high 40s and pulled 3-4 10+lbers a session. But with the water temps being so low it's likely they are all huddled around a spring or sewer pipe or something.

Alright /out/ I'm going fishing tomorrow for the fire time in a long time. I'm also going to be kayak fishing on a lake for the first time. I may end up going alone, in which case it will be my first solo fishing trip.
I've got a nice rod of my own, and I'm going to be fishing for black bass or carpie because that's what's in the lake.
Any helpful hints? I have gone fishing many times, but always with my grandfather who took care of the butchering of the fish. Any advice on killing/cleaning of the fish would be helpful.
It's not harder than cutting the throat/gills, and then cutting carefully along the bottom and scooping everything out, right? Then I'm good to throw it in the cooler with ice, yeah?
Sorry, I'm feeling strangely anxious about it all, maybe it's just late, I'm sure I'll feel better about it when I'm out there!

If you aren't comfortable in a kayak let someone know where you are, pack your phone in a sandwhich bag to keep it dry. The worst part if kayak fishing for me is fi ding a good spot to stow my paddle when I wanna fish

Crappie can be kind of a pain to fillet, if they're anything like big bluegill, and largemouth bass and smallmouth bass tend to taste kinda shitty , so I'm not sure if you'd be keeping those. Your method of cleaning will work, although I find it easier to keep them alive for as long as possible, and you can't cook them unless you you scale them, or ideally if you fillet them, which takes a couple tries to get used to. I've had luck with crappie on little tube jigs slowly retrieved, largemouth will eat about anything if it's warm, and crayfish if you can find them work great for smallmouth. Bring live bait just to keep yourself from getting skunked. Worms etc. Good luck, keep the tradition going.

Been fishing all Sunday, just got home then. Caught a PB Silver Perch with the very first cast of the day with a Spinnerbait, pretty chuffed with that. Also caught 3 small Carp and a poor Turtle on some Shrimp.

Every time I went to take a photo the Perch would flop around and flick mud everywhere so I gave up trying to clean him and the mat and just took a pic. Not like he could be entered into the comp anyway.

There are an unbelievable amount of walleye, smallmouth, and giant panfish to be caught during the spring through early fall. After that it changes to fishing for giant, and I mean giant, kings, cohos, and then soon later big browns and rainbows/steelhead.

Lake Michigan is a top tier fishery all year round

Yea ponds arnt the best. Southern Lake Huron is pretty damn clear as long as there isnt a north wind. St.Clair river too, except when it gets farther down to lake st.clair.
The only problem is dept. I dont have a boat and it's a bitch when they are feeding deep. Perch, bass, trout are pretty easy off the shore. On a boat i've caught salmon, musky, and walleye.

I've been having a lot of line twist issues with my panther martins. Swivels don't help at all, the swivels actually turn WITH the line without actually swiveling! Might be because I'm using extremely thin line.

I thought the blade is supposed to spin around the shaft, but it seems to be spinning the whole lure. Are other inline spinners better or is there's something I'm doing wrong here?

thats going to wind up being more of a medium/medium heavy set up. you're not really going to be able to cast much less than 1/4 of an ounce with that, and you'll probably need more like 3/8 before it really sarts to be fun to use. you cast it by pressing the button, and then holding the spool with your thumb because once you click the button it spins freely. you then give it a little flick and let go with your thumb, then if you dont press your thumb on it when it hits the water to stop the spool you get a backlash. should have gotten a spinning reel/10

Curado owner here, opened that shit up when I got it, had a look and went NOPE and shut that shit up. So that's what it is..... I use mine on a medium/heavy Samaki Rod so I should probably leave everything as it is anyway, still casts small lures pretty far as is.

Comes out of the box 2 on 2 off which works fine for a big range of lures. Rarely if ever do I turn them all on or all off but I will go down to one or up to 3 depending on what I’m trying to achieve distance wise

Depend on what kind of bait and how thicc it is. Typically, you would want something that be able to have enough hook exposed through the body for a good hook set. However, putting hook too big on a lure might kill the action as it lock too much of the length of the body. Also, find that 4 inch labeled soft plastic aren’t always exactly 4 inches so they vary brand to brand.

Yes and no.
Yes if there is a current and if the bait hooklength doesn’t get tangled with the weight. A better setup for this kind of fishing would be to have the sinker on the end and the bait on a dropper further up the mainline. This prevents the two getting wrapped around each other. Theoretically the swivel there should help prevent it, but if the sinker is embedded in the bottom before the rig untangles, it’s going not going to fix itself.

Look at this Australian popper rig. Try this minus the popper.

I think the best solution to tangles is for the bait branches to be able to spin freely around, and perpendicular to, the main line.

How do you guys catch fish in the thaw? I launched some mealworms on a microjig and a slip bobber in the same spots I killed them ice fishing and only got what I'm 90% sure was just a product of the wind. It's bitter cold and there's one small section of ice but the rest is free. I don't even give a shit about bass or anything, a good old bluegill would make me happy enough. All I saw was this little bastard who was washed ashore. I was about to use him as bait when all of the sudden he started moving so I revived him and sent him on his way.

If it’s for fluke lures, definitely go for 2/0 or 3/0. Go 3/0 for paddle tail variant.
In general for me, 4inch creature, tubes, and minnow style soft bait would get 3/0 hooks while thin finesse worm would get 1/0. 2/0 is good for lizards and some smaller profile creature bait as well.

looks solid. if you want a tip for measuring you can use your scissors as a caliper. say you're tying in the tail for an adams, you can eyeball the tail to start, secure it with a few wraps, then measure the length of the hook shank with your scissors, then measure your tail and adjust as necessary. makes proportions so much easier when you're still learning, and especially on smaller flies

RIP my $18 LC lure (bottom one in pic related). You have a good run for almost 2 years and countless fishes. I snagged it on some spot at the beach. It also took one of my kastmaster. I rarely get snagged on the beach. It must be some huge debris that get pushed to close shore because it doesn’t feel like vegetation snag at all. There isn’t rock anywhere near that spot either. I might get a new one in that color again once I get a chance but I’ll put the middle one to use for now. I’m not sure how well mackerel pattern will do on the surf but sometimes fishes don’t care about pattern anyway.

I fished there for an hour and only got a small dink halibut. Definitely not worth the snag. It’s not even a stationary structure since the snag was light enough to be moved by the tide as well. I got snagged by it first with the kastmaster much farther out and slightly off to the side. Later on, I avoid the previous snagged spot but still snagged with my LC at a slightly different spot closer in. Either that there are more than one thing under water or more reasonably, it is still light enough to get moved around by the tides hence how it got there in the first place

nigger, 4lb-6lb fluoro is not bad at all and has little to no memory if you use it often. I've been fishing FC super sniper for years and have caught 15-20lb fish on 4lb fluoro, with no issues what so ever. In fact, I haven't lost a fish to line snap in YEARS from knot failure. Even when i get hung up in rocks, I have a hard time snapping the line.

1.git good reel (Stradic or above)
2. Get good rod
3. Polomar knot
your good, unless you suck at fishing.

i was pretty scared reading the reviews about it being shit at holding a knot but i have not had a knot slip while using the nanofil knot berkley says to use (i add an extra loop to the knot actually). i've had my lures snag a couple times and everytime the line has snapped before the knot slipped, so it's pretty good at holding a knot imo.

I used nanomeme last year, I had a few issues with it. One was being so flimsy it was rather difficult to tie in a light breeze. Another was not lasting the entire season, it became brittle in september after I spooled it in june.. also I used it mostly for small creek fishing and found the added cast distance unnecessary with my 1/64th ounce lures being able to go maybe 30-40 feet. If I try it again I'd probably get the 8 lb, the 4 was not worth the trouble imo. For a hardcore UL memer it might be. But I could catch just as many fish at my fishing hole with 8 lb mono and a long pole so I don't find it worth.

Do you guys always use the Palomar knot? I know how to tie it but more often I use the ol' 6 twists through the loop through the loop spit slide way that my dad taught me. Plus getting the loop through small hook eyes is really tough, especially when ice fishing and my hands are about as useful as a couple carrots taped to my wrist.
Also I found pic related, I'm assuming it's a trolling reel, but I only troll with spinning reels so I can't confirm. I have a couple matching rods. Am I correct? Does it have a place?

i tie knotless knots if i'm using leaders (because they give a neat tag end i can use as a hair rig) and use improved clinch knots for attaching main line to swivels

haven't had any break since i switched to 40lb mono leaders going up to a 40lb braided main line

I have some of these hooks that my dad loves for trout fishing. He normally baits these and uses no other hook nowadays.

I found I could use a Dropshot rig with a fly then use a 1/8 oz jig as my weight. Not really dropshotting more like a high low rig.

These hooks seem to be a good idea to tie flies with. Before I craft some, any patterns that might go well?

Here’s how I look at it. If your going out to try and catch pike and pike only, id use a leader. Whether it’s wire or flouro it doesn’t matter I’ve never had either break and I’ve been using the same flouro leader for several years catching pike. What I like about the flouro ones is they stay straight, once the wire leader gets bent or wrapped around something it will have a permenant kink in it that will trigger you since it won’t be straight ever again

honestly i like when my leader gets just the right amount of kink in it. that special kink that comes after a fight makes my fly a little bit less predictable and i think that makes it look more natural and fish better

Heard someone say they saw an ice fisherman at a particular spot, checked it and sure enough the only safe ice around. Managed to crank in this guy along with some perch, I started yelling because I thought it was a big steelhead , but I was pretty happy when I pulled this bastard instead. I caught some pumpkin seed sunfish in the pond today. Found a spot where a few were. Some snow melt made the water stained but just right. Sun was beating warmly on this side of the pond with stone walls.

Rig used was a dropshot rig with a small hook with a white crappie magnet tail ripped off. The weight was actually a 1/8th oz marabou jig.

The way the crappie magnet tail fell was really nice. It sort of flutters down.

your line doesn't have to be perfectly straight. if there is a little bow on it it can still have a lot of tension on it (if you dont believe me go get a long length of rope and tie one end on a tree and pull on the other until it's off the ground and you'll see that there is a suprising amount of tension on there even though it is sagging)
and even without that tension you can watch your line, usually a take will look like a sudden jolt, or the line moving in such a way that it's not wind. also, if you're ever not sure: hook sets are free
