Oi.
I'm going to do a 3 week drive around Norway, mostly up North, Trondheim- Lofoten Islands. I've recently become a member of DNT. (I need to get the universal lodge key on the spot yet.)

I will mostly sleep in the car and unattended DNT Lodges. I'm going to bring through the Swedish/Norwegian border lots of self-prepared food to cut costs. As far as I am aware of, the duty free limit is 10kg which I exceed.

Is the border even manned? How is Norwegian Police?
Also, any suggestions about places to see, trails to walk, cabins to check in, National Parks?
Any general car-sleeping tips? First time doing it.

Norwegian here.

The border is manned, but not all the time. We have patrols of 2 people moving between guard posts, but if you're planning on moving across the border it shouldn't really be an issue.

Norwegian police are generally very understandable towards /out/-people, and they're likely to help you if you need it.

You need to be aware of the terrain you're hiking in, as maps aren't always accurate. Leave a note on your car when you're out hiking as to where you were headed. That way people have a chance to find you if you break a leg and end up in a crevice somewhere.

As for national parks we have several, but I'm not familiar with the Trondheim/Lofoten area. If you plan on moving further East, check out Femunden Nasjonalpark (Femunden National Park). It's one of the best areas in Norway, and great for canoeing if you're into that.

Be sure to clean up after yourself. Don't leave trash behind and treat people you meet with respect. They will return the favor.

Yep,

I'm from Sweden and have been to Lofoten/Vesterålen twice. Once in february and once in june. I've got to say I did some nice hikes there and the lodges are very well taken care of.

The most difficult part for me was finding the path, because the guidebook said "explicit path", which clearly meant some tiny red dot on some rocks 50 m apart.

I could recommend a lodge called Snytindhytta located in the eastern part of Lofoten. It's about a half day hike from the road and from there are a few day hikes you can take.

When driving across the border, I suppose you will be crossing on the E10. There you might have to show your passport, but don't worry about them searching through your luggage or anything, since the crossing is quite small.

Saltfjellet/Svartisen national park is apparently one of the best NP's in Norway
There are plenty of NP's on both sides of the border going north, Rago/Padjelanta might be a good choice. But just pick and choose, lots of good nature in Nordland
