*it takes first hand personal experience.*
i didn't "get it" or feel the real benefit or rewards of it until i was sober and mature enough to recognize what i was experiencing when out. you have to be open to it. i think some people are not open enough to it to get the full message.
for me its like being out washes away all the weight and stress of a regular, busy life. and it cleanses me with fresh air, clean water and a spicy sweet beautiful potpourri of natural smells on the air, with nothing but the sounds of water flowing over rocks in the river , or birds gently singing off in the distance through the trees. it becomes music to my ears. it has a healing and energizing effect.
its peaceful and serene, pure, clean and natural. for me this is key, being in a truly "natural" environment like the woods, mountains, desert, lake, river valley, etc., surrounded by nature and completely free of all the trappings that go with our modern lifestyle inside "civilized society"
also the sense of adventure and excitement of it all,t he physical activity of being on foot in the woods, exploring, wandering, being as independent of society as possible for as long as possible. feeling of self reliance of a wandering hero
basic science/physics behind it:
Fresh air and exercise is good for you, mentally, spiritually and physically
