I'm looking for a decent wrist gps unit, and what's your opinion, is this foretrex shit-tier?

It seems this GPS is suited for military use, though there's no reason why you couldn't use it for something else. It's got a wrist strap which is cool, and a couple of other features that would be helpful for geocaching (listing nearest waypoints for example)

what exactly would you be using it for OP?

Are those things worth the money? The only one I can find in Sweden is the 'Brunton Get-Back mini GPS' for the equivalent of 150 dollar. Seems like a total rip-off compared to the prices on amazon, which isn't even a third of that.

Do you only want a locator that provides positioning and compass features so you can couple it with a paper map like here: >>123372 ?

Do you want it to store positions and paths and provide basic orientation like this one: >>123348
?

Do you want it to have a fully featured onboard map like pic related?

Those are all very different kinds of GPSes OP, make up your mind.

Decide needs and wants, then find a receiver that meets those.
My 60CSx is on its last legs, next will be a 78. Garmins are tough to beat.
Factor in cost of maps if you get a device that supports those; base map is worthless.

There was a point and time that I was really taking a good hard look at it. I realized it would have basically been a $200 waste of money.

They're basically a neutered GPS. Isn't it ironic that you have a GPS but you still need a map to get around?

This thread is relavent to my interests.
I think op is looking for a hugely stripped down GPS that will just provide lat and long .
Pretty good idea really , as it would save weight and only be a companion / timesaver to your map reading skills

I agree. Gps isnt and shouldnt be the only mean of navigation. You still should be using a map and a compass, and use your gps only once in a while, maybe taking waypoints for just in case.

When i was doing my military service, we were allowed to use gps once in 24 hrs.

Some maps+compass gear use up more space and weight than a second GPS with batteries.

I've noticing a few hiking orgs around here in Australia have made GPS and Mobile phone the mandatory kit-- notably excluding the maps+compass bit.

While I somewhat agree with your philosophy... I say:

GPS is convienent. Real convienent. With the appropriate maps loaded, and a good understanding of their capabilities (and limitations), they're a great tool.

But ... being electronic, they can and do break. Mine locked up on me a dozen times this weekend, requiring a battery-pull to reset. I've crashed my motorcycle and peeled the case/electronics apart like a clam.

So, carry a map/compass and know how to use those. But really, GPS is pretty nice to have.
