I'm about to hike 100km of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia with two people i don't like, and 4 people i do like, so in order to prepare, i figure i should know what it's like.

Why do you dislike them?

If it's something petty you'll probably learn to tolerate them after a couple days out of your usual environment.

If it's something serious and it's mutual, just try to agree to stay out of each other's way.

If it's serious but they don't particularly dislike you, it's going to be shit.

First of all, why are they coming if everyone else dislikes them?

Second, it's hard to be pompous when you're digging your own latrine. If they're pulling their own weight I think everyone will feel better about them after a couple days.

Also, I'm 99% certain that they won't pull their weight, given the fact that neither of them have ever done anything like this before. I can just see them complaining: "It's wet" "It's cold" "This food sucks" "my sleeping bad is wet". ugh.

honestly long distance stuff doesn't really matter - dont stick in a group just everyone hike at their own pace and say ever 2-3 hours you stop and let everyone catch up

then you only have to see the people you hate at night which by that time hopefully everyone is too tired to annoy each other and just goes to bed

it its not one of their trips....
ive been on all sides of this issue. based on the limited information i have- it looks like it can really only go two pretty obvious ways:

1) it can exacerbate the disdain and you will literally never talk to them again.

or

2) you will find out they are not so bad and have a really enjoyable hike and maybe connect with them on Facebook or some shit and never talk to them again.

either way you probably wont really ever be interacting with them again so you might as well just be a little more forgiving than usual and let more shit go. just dont let it impact your friendship with the people that you do like because that happened with me when i went on a trip with my friends girlfriend who already hated me a little bit and acted like a major pompous asshole (even my own gf pulled me aside and told me i was going beyond my normal levels of being just kind of pompous and well into asshole territory) and while the rift is pretty much healed it really impacted our friendship for at least a year.

Be an asshole
I had been the designated asshole of the gang for years (i dont have to now, we are more picky)
Never regretted it, always enjoyed it
Just call them and cancel it, explain the rest when they dont appear
If anyone gives you shit, point out they are in fact relieved, they will be over it after an hour or so and actually thank you

Actually, if I was you, I wouldn't have gone /out/ with people I hate. I mean, come on, not eveyone in my large extended family gets along so the outcasts in conflict take turn showing up. Don't go this time, the two people probably don't want you there either (and you are outnumbered!). Plan another hike when they aren't there. Heck, make new friends as well.

I think the older I get, the older everybody gets, there are just going to be people we will never like, maybe we can be civil to each other in passing, but the personality differences are just so vast that when you are spending an extended period of time with them you will all be miserable.

Like, I have a friend I actually like to spend time with at cafes, but I hate going hiking at her, I want to watch birds, she wants to chat, we make each other miserable hiking together.

Don't know, it may actually get better given a little time with people you don't like. I have more of a problem hiking with people I do like on multiday hikes. I get into a bit of a zone hiking alone, which I love, and I think it's due to experiencing some silence and reflection. I crave that now and feel it about 4 hours into a good hike. Having someone else along seems to screw that energy up pretty badly unless they're a very quiet type, and it can get as irritating as someone constantly waking you up from a good dream. Add to that the fact that mildly annoying but excusable traits may become utterly obnoxious to you if you have to deal with them in close quarters for a while. Minor speech patterns ("talking up" for example), the goofiness or frequency of their laugh, the way they slurp their soup, even their sharing minor gripes of a blister or shifted pack or the way they put wood on the fire - strange how these things can make you want to literally throw them in the nearest body of water after a couple of days of constant, inescapable contact.

You don't have to stick with all 6 people, OP. You all will probably have different speed, stamina, hiking styles...hell, you don't even have to camp together or stay at the same shelters. It can be fun to let the group drift apart, then when you meet back up now and then you are actually happy to see each other.

Just go and do what you want to, if you spend your time hating them (not sure what that entails exactly) you will have a bad time. Let them hate you if they want to, who cares. It's not like you are all going to be together all the time, that's ridiculous and it's only a 3 day hike anyways.
