When you filter use clear water from a running water source. Standing water is usually heavily contaminated with bacteria/viruses.
If you have the time. Letting water sit over night is a good idea to let sediments settle down to the bottom.
Don't drink water from streams that can be contaminated with chemical contamination or heavy metals from pesticide runoffs, mine tailings or industry. There is no way to make those drinkable, you will poison yourself. Clear mountain springs are preferable, avoid big rivers. The less humans are between you and the source of the water, the better.
