>>123508there are not too many knots you need to know to do everything knotwise that you could want. there may be better knots for the job, but whatevs.
need to know knots:
bowline motherfucker! the greatest knot there is. a sheetbend is basically a bowline. difference being a sheetbend connects 2 lines together were as a bowline creates a loop out of the end of 1 line. the good thing about a sheetbend is that you can add a line to another anywhere on it, and it wont slip. also make sure the tail end of the bowline ends inside the loop, not outside. if it is outside its what i call a backwards bowline, and will not untie as easily as a correct bowline. major pain in the ass. so get it right.
next knot clove hitch bitch! the next greatest knot to know. thats how you secure one end of a rope to an object. a prusik is similar to a clove hitch but different. i find i use cloves way more then prusiks. both are easy to learn so learn em.
truckers hitch for maximum mechanical advantage. basically allows you to cinch down on a line. good for securing gear on the roof of your suv or whatever needs to be held in place.
obvious knots you better know right now are the overhand knot. the most basic form of a knot. also look into what i call a stopper knot or a figure 8 knot. can be handy and is simple. the square knot. good for tying two ends together. if you want to get a little fancier try a fishermens knot. these are the absolute must know knots, and they should be good enough for 99% of your knot tying needs. if you cant make something work with these then fuck off.
someday i might make an infograph of them. until then critics, let me know what should be added/taken away from my must know knots. i'd be interested in /out/s opinion.
