MSR FreeLite 1 on sale for $276 at REI online (usually 370).

I'm not sure if you can combine the discount but... it says there should be "an additional 20% off" for REI members. That would be $220 if true, a huge discount for quite a light tent.

Minimum trail weight 2 lbs 7 oz.

I bought a $350 tent about 6 years ago. It held up VERY poorly (it was "light" for a reason.) Now I buy whatever small 1-2 man Ozark Trail special is at Walmart, use it as hard as I want and don't sweat the extra pound or two. If it rips, leaks, or a pole breaks, I duct tape it and pitch it for a new one when I get home. So far, though, they've lasted remarkably well.

OP here, that's a good philosophy too. I am looking at this tent because I am switching from my $40 Big 5 sporting goods tent. The problem with that tent was single-wall construction, and no head room so the condensation was really bad.

Do your walmart tents at least have a rainfly and some head room inside?

This. Ultralight usually means thin shit. I bought a 2 person tent from aliexpress with a rainfly (cost less than $100) and is actually pretty awesome. Left it in my back yard all weekend while it was raining and it never leaked a single drop of moisture inside.

What happened to it? What brand was it?

How many other tents have you gone through? Why not just get something in the middle of the two that will hold up better instead of being wasteful? A decent tent with a bit of care should easily last 10 years with only minor repairs, if any, and reapplication of DWR.

I have a Eureka Midori 2 I use solo, got it for ~$150 CAD ($120 USD) and it's been going strong 5 years. 68D, 4lb 7oz all in.

I can't imagine using something with 15D floor without a ground sheet, which would use up some of the weight savings. Granted, the Freelite 2 (I know you're getting the 1 but easier to compare with mine) is almost half the weight, but is a 2lb reduction really worth it?

I guess MSR and REI have good warranty. I'd say go for it if you want a super light frestanding tent. A friend got a new Hubba NX last year that he seems to like.
