So... I'm interested in getting out to some BLM for some camping. The BLM website is pretty shit in terms of designated areas though... They have things like regulations and activities, but fuck all for where one can actually DO these things; there's no 'Go here for X and fuck all'. How the hell is someone supposed to find these mythical pieces of land to do whatever on?

Most blm land is actually leased to ranchers or other businesses and you cannot freely camp on it. The blm meme is just that, a meme.

There is some great blm land but it's not advertised. Like the shit around area 51 is blm land that they refuse to lease so its campable. Or most blm land on the side of a mountain. But it isn't easy to find out who is leasing what until some ranch hand chases you away.

National forest land, on the other hand, is extremely well marked. And unless there is an active cutting lease on a section, it's all yours.

You could download the avenza app which has land ownership maps to find out where blm land is located. I've never had any problems with going out to a spot and doing whatever I wanted (camping, shooting, hunting).

The only way is to go into a physical office. There's shittons of good camping on BLM land in the West, but you aren't going to find it on the internet, the info is just not there.

I work for BLM. You can camp and use BLM leased land freely as long as there isn't any official BLM signs saying otherwise.

Ranchers and oil companies will try to tell you otherwise but they're not correct unless BLM has included a no public use as part of the management plan. It's your land. Go use it.

I feel ya. A rancher tried to intimidate me while I was doing field work last summer. You could call a ranger to sort it out if they won't listen but theyre usually a few hours away just because theyre spread thin

However, dispersed camping is not a necessity. Typical backcountry campsites are great in any national park as well.

Every state has a website like that, it's actually a nicely designed website.

A couple things: BLM land with restrictions is the exception, not the rule. Anytime there's special restrictions in place, it'll say on the page for that particular area e.g. No shooting, no dispersed camping, etc.

Second, once you find an area, find the office that holds jurisdiction and just call them. The rangers are knowledgeable and have always been happy to help me.

Third, make sure when you call you ask about access. It'll save you a lot of headaches. Hope this helps.
