look, the kid went out and lived as a drifter / vagabond / hobo for a couple of years, working odd jobs, living down in slab city and roughing it pretty well. cool. i'm impressed by that, i genuinely am. i'm even impressed that he managed to survive 100+ days in the alaskan wilderness, but the truth is that the kid must have had a fucking death wish to go out there. there are a thousand more forgiving and resource-plentiful places you could choose to run off to if you want to be a woodsman.
and what's the worst is what he did to his family.
honestly, mccandles was a manlet hipster fag who had some kind of issue with himself IMO, which gave him a bunch of mental issues, made him feel disconnected from everyone, then he selfishly ran away and left all of the people who cared about him in the lurch. he chose the cold dead alaskan wilderness over his family who loved him? for fucks sake, not for nothing, but he sort of got what he deserved in a lot of ways.

remember that they all hate themselves, and it's ultimately themselves they're running from, because they feel unworthy of the world, their family, their peers and everyone else.
