>>1237172No, what a stupid assumption. Mountaineering is a lot of logistical work on top of having the necessary skills and equipment to summit. If I want to self guide a group to the top of rainier, I need to arrange for permits, make sure everyone has crevasse rescue skills, get route information, print out route maps, get the necessary permits, make sure everyone has crampons / ice axe / helmets / rope / harnesses. You need to plan for weather and be constantly checking conditions, sometimes executing your plans on a narrow weather window that comes up suddenly.
Stupid mountaineers can also just fucking wing it and succeed. It's totally possible to be a fucking moron and steal a summit of something difficult. But you increase the risks of injury significantly. That's not suicidal, though, that's just stupid people rolling the dice. You can also do all of the prep work and have a freak accident fuck your shit up, too. I just almost paralyzed a buddy when climbing because a fist-sized hunk of sandstone broke free on a foothold, falling 40 feet and cracking him right on the spine.
But none of that is suicidal. None of us go out trying to injure ourselves, but we understand that injuries can definitely happen. The best mountaineers and climbers are dutiful in risk mitigation, and you try to work every advantage you can to increase your chances of a safe trip. That also means knowing when to fucking bail instead of pushing through.
