I think this thread is more /out/ than /n/. I'm sure some people on here have done road trips across Canada/USA before and have some tips for me. I'm going on a road trip with 3 friends from Ontario to British Columbia and back again this summer, and we'll be going through Canada on the way there and through the US on the way back. Just wondering if anyone has tips on:

>sleeping
>bathing
>food
I think we're planning on just sleeping in the car on the side of the road most nights, with the odd motel rental when we need showers. But does anyone have tips on what to bring, where to set up for the night, what kind of food to buy to say money, etc?

You can sleep at most highway rest stops and turnouts unless otherwise posted (and even if it's posted you can still get away with it a lot of the time).
Another trick I've picked up is that there's usually a place on either side of a bridge (in rural areas obvs) where you can pull off and camp for the night, a public boat launch, access trail, turnaround, etc.
I'd recommend getting a good road atlas because Google maps doesn't always have a lot of information about rural Canada.

Do you know if that kind of thing is acceptable down in the States as well? Don't want our trip to get ruined by getting in trouble with the law in the States.

For the most part, yeah. Every state will let you park at a rest stop for at least 8 hours (12 in Oregon) and the bridge trick usually works as long as you're in a rural area and it's not explicitly posted that you can't park overnight there.
If you do get a knock on the window, just be honest. You're on a road trip, you didn't want to drive tired so you found a quiet place to pull off and sleep. The worst they'll do is tell you leave.
A lot of people talk about truck stop and Walmart parking lots, but I've tried both and there's just too much noise and too many sketchy people for my comfort.
Freecampsites.net is another good resource, lots of boondockers and van dwellers types use it to find spots to park.
Another good tip is that RV parks and private campgrounds like KOA often sell showers and they're often cheaper and less crowded than truck stops. A lot of state parks and public rec areas have coin op showers, too.

Also, if you didn't know dispersed camping is free on the vast majority of US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management property and quite a lot of crown land in Canada.
Another good reason to have a road atlas, it marks even the tiniest bits of public land.

I did two people (me and a buddy) in a four door Chevy sedan and it was...snug.
But a $20 campsite split four ways ain't bad if you can't find a place to pitch up for free. Just get a couple cheap tents from Target or Walmart and have a rotating roommate schedule.

I'm from Manitoba now living in BC. I've done the road trip back and forth a few times. Don't be afraid to chat up the locals. Small town Canadians at least are super friendly. Take your time and enjoy the trip into the Rockies. Seriously the best scenery Canada has to offer. Saskatchewan is boring as fuck. Stay out of the large prairie cities unless you want to get stabbed. Fuel up before you leave Alberta. As soon as you hit the mountains gas prices shoot up. If you make it as far as Vancouver, watch put for other drivers. The lower mainland of bc has the most drivers in Canada that I've ever experienced.
