If you burn smokeless paraffin oil (the kind used for oil candles and dead flame lamps, often seen in churches and fancy bars and whatnot) it's not as risky, but if you burn the proper lamp oil (which is essentially highly refined kerosene) it's not advised. Dirty kero you absolutely cannot burn but "indoor-outdoor" lamp oil still needs to be well ventilated. Even the cleaner paraffin isn't a great idea.

tl:dr; you should get a candle lantern for such an inclosed space

What's the problem anon? They're comfy af, they burn solid fuel which is much easier to transport than liquid or gas, they aren't affected by temperature like gas and oil are, and candles are cheaper'n monkeydicks. And they don't emit noxious fumes in tents and cabins. Quite frankly they're an excellent solution.

This. I've also taken up candlemaking as a hobby, since I don't run electricity to my cabin. If you've got bees on your homestead, you can make beeswax candles, though they won't burn as well as paraffin. They smell better though.

They are as safe as any other combustion inside an enclosed space. Without proper ventilation, you are subject to CO2 poisoning. Some are faster at poisoning you than others.

For oil lanterns that only means "smoke-free" lamp oil. there's a huge difference between the regular and smoke-free versions.

One of them being that smoke-free oil isn't supposed to be used with cold blast lanterns, such as the one in OPs pic. It's too thick and has too high a flash point, meaning it burns dimmer and over time the wick will clog, eventually causing it to burn even darker and create lots of smoke and be anything but smoke-free. For the most efficient burn you want a fuel with a flash point around 100ºC. Clear kerosene tends to be very low at around 20º-30º while smokeless/odourless paraffin oil can be very high, around 200º, and also has a higher viscocity. To burn just right and not fuck up the wick you need to compromise somewhat, which means some fumes. If you can find the right lantern oil you're set, where I live it's almost impossible to find so I mix smokeless/odourless paraffin oil with clear kerosene in a 2:1 ratio and it seems to work quite well.

Not candle-anon but just to clarify, you mean mixing paraffin wax with beeswax to help make it burn better? Seems like a good idea, plus it cuts the bees wax a bit so you can make more dollarydoos.

Paraffin oil however is more similar to kerosene and not particularly related to paraffin wax except ultimately they both are byproducts of petroleum.

I suppose you're right. If oxygen moves across a concentration gradient then it's no problem but I don't know much about physics, but if the o2 is converted to co2 then the air pressure doesn't change, so would new oxygen molecules still move in from outside?

Bought this BRS-55 Mini Gas Lantern.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it apparently only uses 6g of gas per hour. One thing is for sure....it won't spill lamp oil all over your sleeping bang making it UNCLEANABLE and it wont leave smoke residue in your tent.

My uncle works for the railroad, he gets these things. They work well and still look kinda aesthetic. They make led versions that probably would suffice. I don't know why you need a lamp in your tent. I only sleep in my tent. If I need a light I use a flashlight as it's much easier to turn off/on. Maybe just bring a tarp and make a rainfly to use your lantern in and like read or whatever you want to do.

What's the point? Why not just use a small battery operated lantern?

Save money on gas in the long run, most can run for 48h+ on a charge, are waterproof, more durable, extremely low maintenance, not as dangerous, no fumes.

Even if you carry a canister stove, you can use a battery operated lantern in many more scenarios. Just doesn't seem worth it to me.

the fuel is in an enclosed container in the bottom which is made of metal only the wick seeps it out it doesnt spill out. the glass windshield is protected by metal wires in case of tripping over with it. they are safe enough.

they aren't sealed well though, if you tip it too far it leaks out of the air duct or out the top of the fount, but even if you dropped it bad enough to get the fuel to drip into the wick it's more likely to put the fire out rather than ignite. unless you're burning something highly ignitable like gasoline or alcohol or even some kerosenes

Comfy factor. People light fires even when they aren't cold. But..in many places you aren't allowed to make fires (national parks for example). This one is light and i'm bringing gas anyway.

I will test it against LED lanterns i have some time this month when i'm doing my next overnight and will report the comfy levels to weight ratio.

I think it's less about the oxygen in this case and more about the toxic levels of CO2 and CO. shirly you can find those values online - in fact any CO detector will have a lower limit that sets it off. maybe invest in a CO2/CO detector

The problem is CO - carbon monoxide - not CO2 - carbon dioxide.

OP - please don’t use anything like that inside your tent or any other enclosed space. They are NOT safe. Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a real risk and can easily be fatal.
