What does /out/ use? I'm looking for ideas. Want a really powerful flashlight that has the ability to be quite dim as well, ability to focus beam would be good, and rechargeable is a plus. Red or blue option would be nice but no biggie. Looking to spend under $100.

I actually own pic related, has a red and blue option and is pretty bright, but at 75 lumens (spread over a wide angle) it's not as bright as what I'm looking for. It sure is handy though, and headlamps make camping so much easier.

Apparently blue is good for seeing through fog (reflects back significantly less than wider spectrum white light) but it's also an alternative color for reading (maps and whatnot) without wrecking your scotopic vision with white light. because maps often have black, green, blue, red, lines, etc. you might need a couple choices of narrowband light to make out the correct colorations.

In practice the reason I use the blue option sometimes is just because it can see more clearly with it than the red when I don't want to blast the white light (like when I'm being sneaky)

Get Nitecore. They have many models with added red lights. Some have RBG+UV added. Multiple models have infinitely variable brightness and all the stupid flashing modes are usually hidden. Quality built. Expect to pay 40-110$ depending what you get. Also get their chargers and a protected 18650 battery.

After night hiking with a flash light many times, and then buying a headlamp, i was a bit disappointed. Reason being that your hand automatically follows your peripheral vision, while with the headlamp you have to turn your whole head. Also naturally staring down when you are tired and only glancing up every few seconds sucks for the same reason.

Would rather carry a flashlight.

Black diamond storm. They’re like 50-60 bucks. Very bright with a long battery life. It has dimming, Red/green/blue lights, the ability to switch between spotlight of flood, and strobe.

I have several headlamps. The Black Storm I use for general use, has good light and most useful it has 4 AAA batteries, most of the headlamps both big and small use only 2 or 3 AAA. I also have two high power ones for night time use when a lot of light is important for safety...

I've had good luck with Feix flashlights and headlampes.
with the latest Cree led bulb technology super fuckin bright in small efficient packages

I use the older model spot, I think it's 130 lumens. It works for what I need it for: cooking at night, leaving tent in middle of night, fishing in early morning. I'll prob upgrade to something better when it breaks, but I don't want something with a separate battery pack, or anything super heavy.

If I ever need anything more, I have a 1000 lumen convoy c8, and a 1000 lumen convoy s3 I got for $10 each. Might not be accurate on the lumens, but they are mighty bright, hella durable, and fairly water resistant. Plus, I have a bunch of unprotected 18650s.

I also just bought one of these on a whim yesterday. 200 lm, tiny, waterproof enough. We'll see how it works.

Waterproof and pretty solid construction too. The included 18650 battery sucks, though. You'll want a better one.

Petzl Tactikka Plus and Black Diamond Storm are both exceptional headlamps. They're both pretty powerful, they're both water resistant, the Black Diamond is rechargeable, I think they both have a red option but IDK.

Most of today's nitecore stuff is 900 or more lumens. Throwing distance will depend on reflector size, surface and led type. Pic related is rated at 190 meters despite being aprox the same output, but it will give better flood. Make sure to check beam shots on youtube before buying, i personally like "floddy" flashlights rather than "big led lasers".

This might look like the same thing but its not. If you want to spend 8 bux sure, it will do. But consider that somebody needed to machine that thing, make all the small parts, make the battery and the charger ans ship it to your home from china. All for 8 dollars. What do you think you are buying? Those are all "xxxfire" brand lights and they are not dependable for a night hike. The front lens is held in place with glue instead of a thread and will fall of after a year. The contacts are often unclean and will need brushing and lubing and you never know when it might fail on you. But the worst thing is the UI. It probably has no memory mode and you ether have to scroll through all five modes to turn it of or each time you click to turn it on it will also step into the next mode. Trash. Further more the battery is half the rated capacity, they simply lie. And both it and the charger are a fire hazard. They are good for around the house, leaving it in your car, at work etc, not to be taken into the hills at 2 am.
