According to most of the books I've read on the subject, the problem isn't rich Westerners per say. It's the rich Westerners who have no interest in Mountaneering and just want the bragging rights of claiming they climbed Everest, and so they "get into shape" for Everest by spending all day every day at their gym with their personal trainer for a year and then do "baby's first two day technical climb" just to learn how carabiners and shit work before flying off to Kathmandu.
Basically, I'm talking about guys who "got into shape" by spending a year lifting weights and running on treadmills in their gym, climb Mt. Rainier on the easiest route, then inevitably collapse 3/4 of the way up Everest and ruin the summit attempts of a dozen other climbers who have to miss the summit window to go look for him.
That's not a meme, go to most Everest guiding websites, they require two days summiting Rainier as the "minimum experience necessary" to join their group.
Also there's a big problem with normies thinking climbing Everest is the pinnacle of of physical strength and endurance, so you have people from every identity politics group in the country looking to climb Everest just to prove that "MEMBERS OF (insert stupid belief/identity politics group here) CAN DO IT TOO, HATERS BTFO!!!1!11!
