How the FUCK do you deal with snakes? I love going /out/, I’m not bothered by bears, by spiders, other bugs or anything . But just knowing that these fucking creatures are silently lurking right where you step is horrifying. It’s one of my biggest fears. What the fuck can I do about this. If I see a snake while /out/, I have nightmares about it that night.

Snakes can actually kill you. The worst any spider in the US will do to an adult (unless by some chance you're allergic) is scar you. But only pussies think spiders and snakes are scary. The thing in North America that you should be afraid of are ticks. They are quiet, you can hardly feel them, deer ticks are impossible to find in your hair, and they can give you life threatening diseases that are with you for life.

Snakes are alright, just don't act like an idiot frolicking in long grass and around areas that look like they would hold snakes.
I saw three or four on my last trip and didn't have an issue.

With that said you should always carry the appropriate equipment in case you do get tagged.

Dunno about hiking but for camping you just gotta be noisy. Went camping for 3 days this Easter and on the afternoon of the first day discovered a Tiger snek had a home in the grass 6 feet to right of me where I was fishing when he popped out for a swim across the creek and back. Made it a point to smack my shovel hard into the ground near his home occasionally and stomped the ground frequently walking around and didn't see him for the next 2 days. Make it obvious you are around and they'll steer clear.

Snakes are highly attuned to ground vibration. Carry a hiking pole or medium-large stick and occasionally pound the ground with it. If not available, then stomp the ground every few steps and burn those k-cals.

Also, stay on game trails, but beware the snakes follow scent and will likely be on the edge of them, which is why you make yourself "Too big to eat" in their eyes by causing ground vibrations.

I don't know if this is just an Australian thing, but these things called gaiters. They're tough canvas, stop snakes as well as anything pointy, itchy or scratchy. Take getting used to, but pretty great.

unless you're in Australia or in the jungles of South America just be careful, few of you are going to be far enough in the backcountry for a snakebite to be an issue. you have 4 hours before permanent damage begins to occur for most snakes.

Snake boots exist, get a pair.

Carry a long stick with a fork at the top, if you see a snek, fork it. Fork day snek behind the head and pin it, then you can smoosh or chippity chop.

The real threat is ticks, because eugh. Can cause Lyme disease, can also make you deathly allergic to meat (look it up, legit terrifying.)

Shit was cash, we were on a group of 15 people and many of them were first time hikers. Everytime we'd find a snake and signal them to walk around the location they'd go a few good meters off the path, where they'd be more likely to find other snakes.
