Hey. I am looking to travel with a diy raft, for 4-6 days.
Anyone can share their experiece?

What is the best/cheapest ways to make relatively big raft on the spot (no car)?
Where would you get free materials?
Also, steering? going back to shore for camping?

buy a kayak, kiddo

Shit is very expensive, isn't it? I was thinking old bottles, bags, etc, stuffed in net, and a frame on top. Still waiting for ideas and experiences. No one has done this before?

I tried to make a raft once more outta novelty then to actually use, if your deadset on it get the blue barrels in pic. They are the best but keep in mind your not gonna be able to pick it up outta the water and transport it.

Blue barrrels are cheap af, look on craigslist and youll see farmers selling them for 10$ or so. If it just you 4 should work fine

if you're so set on making your own then your own on site then you'll need bamboo, 300ft-1000ft of paracord, and a machete. And probably your own paddle.

>collect fifteen 12ft+ long bamboo stalks
>line nine of them up and attach them with the rope
>create a lifted storage area with 4ft long cuts of bamboo stacked 2 more layers high
>create anchor point on ship with remaining rope
>attach to tree on land when not in use

4 x barrels on a simple deck. Doesn't have to be the large size. Foot for comparison.

Don't see why not, but you'd need a rudder to stop you going in circles and probably a person paddling each side sitting or a single person standing and alternating

Its basically a ferry but its withstood everything that river can throw at it for many years. That includes floating trees, floods, - 30c winters, etc.

You're best coming over to /diy/ for advice for this rather than /out/ tho, but it really is a simple build which you could assemble at your start point.

This reminds me of a news story from many years ago about this young hipster couple who built a log raft and were going to ride the Mississippi all the way down to Louisiana. They didn't make it very far when the Coast Guard stopped them, pointed out that their raft was about to fall apart, they had no life jackets and that they were going to cause an obstruction to commercial river traffic.
Moral of the story, OP, don't try this on a shipping river.

Depends on your scale of "very expensive" you can legitimately get a full set up (boat, paddle and type III PFD) for around $250 at Walmart. It won't be an expedition grade whitewater set up, but it'll be fine for paddling still water or class I/II rivers.

think I remember reading a long time ago that cutting stalks could be dangerous, but I think it's just if they are growing really close and you just use a machete, but still I'd approach with a bit of caution

Did that on the Wisconsin River one weekend. Go Overkill on the barrels because done will fill with water no matter how hard you try to seal them.
