oil isn't super important, it just needs oil, and I mean like, yeah, a cotton ball dipped in say....canola oil is better than nothing, keep a small bag of oiled cotton, if you want to really be thrifty, cotton balls rolled in petroleum jelly can really help if sure caught in a downpour, because the thick as hell viscosity of the jelly will keep your carbon safe, and you can use them as tinder. but me, I personal use 3 in one or choji oil on anything carbon.
another thing you can look into if you're unfamiliar with sharpening, get a smiths like pic related. its a useful little piece of kit and it comes with a ferro rod, if you can learn off of such a tiny rid, you can use any other ferro in existence.
and yessir, any mug with a smooth unfinished bottom will do great.
